Physics deals with the physical things. Talking about physical, it does not necessarily mean that you must see anything physical with your naked eyes, therefore let us correct the notion that 'if you can't see it, then it is not physical'.


Just like the wind, we can't see it but we can feel it around us. The fact that we can't see the wind doesn't disqualify it from being a physical thing. Actually, the wind exists and blows in all direction: east, west, north and south, yet we can't SEE it

The aim of physics is to study these physical things in all aspect. Take for instance, using the wind as example, a physicist would not only study the movement of the wind, but would also pay attention to the direction of its motion, either North, South, Northeast, Southwest,etc.
He would also try to know how massive it is, at what speed it is moving, how often or how soon is the speed changing? If the speed of the wind is changing, is it increasing or decreasing with time? Why is the wind moving or what is making it to move, and so on. This is PHYSICS!!!


As said earlier, physics deal with physical things, and it is a general belief that physical things have weight ( though their weight could be very small or negligible sometimes) and can occupy space. If Physical things can actually occupy space, then it would be more conventional to say that physical things are matter. Remember,
MATTER is anything that has mass(weight) and occupies space.


So then, physics is the study of matter...


To stop at this is very wrong. Physics does not only study matter, but it also studies the causes of movement of matter. For example, taking the wind earlier mentioned into consideration, if there is nothing responsible for its motion, then it wouldn't move at all. Something must be responsible for its movement, a kind of force.
Let's apply this principle to our normal day to day activity. Why do you think that an hungry man would always want to lie low idle? Reason is because he has no force left in him enough to stand and do work. So also, a man who is currently observing a 40days dry fasting would be reluctant to join others to push a car. Why, because he lacks the impetus to do so.

Without this Force to push a matter, a matter will remain unmoved. This force displaces the matter and then we say work has been done. But where is force itself coming from? Let's take the force applied by human being into consideration. The hungry man mentioned earlier didn't join others to push the car because he was lacking something; food. If he then has a bowl of meal to eat, he would be able to join the other to join force with them to do the pushing 'work'. Initially, the man lacks the ability to do work, but after eating, he acquired the the ability to do work. This means that the ability to do work is inside the food. Wait a minute, what does food majorly supply? Energy of Course!!!
Now let's balance the equation:
Food = ability to do work
Food= energy
Therefore ENERGY= ABILITY TO DO WORK

So we have derived that a matter will only move when energy is available to make it move. We have deduced that energy provides force and force causes motion, therefore we can modify our definition of physics by simply saying;

PHYSICS is the study of Matter in relation to Energy
