The Immaculate Conception is a dogma of the Catholic Church maintaining that from the moment when she was conceived in the womb, the Blessed Virgin Mary was kept free of original sin, so that she was from the start filled with the sanctifying grace normally conferred in baptism . It is one of the four dogmas in Roman Catholic Mariology. The doctrine of the immaculate conception of Mary concerns her mother's conception of her, not Mary's conception of Jesus (the virgin birth of Jesus) nor the perpetual virginity of Mary. Although the belief that Mary was conceived immaculate was widely held since at least Late Antiquity , the doctrine was not dogmatically defined until December 8, 1854, by Pope Pius IX in his papal bull Ineffabilis Deus. It is not formal doctrine except in the Roman Catholic Church. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is observed on December 8 in many Catholic countries as a holy day of obligation or patronal feast , and in some as a national public holiday....... [b]Readings at Mass First reading Genesis 3:9-15,20 © After Adam had eaten of the tree the Lord God called to him. ‘Where are you?’ he asked. ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden;’ he replied ‘I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.’ ‘Who told you that you were naked?’ he asked ‘Have you been eating of the tree I forbade you to eat?’ The man replied, ‘It was the woman you put with me; she gave me the fruit, and I ate it.’ Then the Lord God asked the woman, ‘What is this you have done?’ The woman replied, ‘The serpent tempted me and I ate.’ Then the Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, ‘Be accursed beyond all cattle, all wild beasts. You shall crawl on your belly and eat dust every day of your life. I will make you enemies of each other: you and the woman, your offspring and her offspring. It will crush your head and you will strike its heel.’ The man named his wife ‘Eve’ because she was the mother of all those who live. Responsorial Psalms. You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?’ ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you’ the angel answered ‘and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. MEDITATION: The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary May it be done to me according to your word. (Luke 1:38) Imagine the setting: a pure, virginal young woman is presented with a choice from God. Will she obey, or will she choose her own way? In the pristine beauty of the Garden of Eden, Eve chose to disobey God, and with her choice, sin entered the world. In Nazareth, Mary chose to obey. With her “yes” to God, she became the new Eve and began the undoing of Eve’s disobedience, ushering in God’s grace and redemption. Her yes reversed Eve’s no. Choices. Each of us is presented with a myriad of choices throughout the day. They can bring grace into the world, or they can bring discord. Of course, we don’t have the benefit of being born without original sin, like Mary. But we are redeemed! When we were baptized, we were cleansed of original sin. Through Christ we have also been blessed with “every spiritual blessing in the heavens” (Ephesians 1:3). So we have all the resources we need to make the right choices. As Mary did, so can we do. In each yes or no we choose, we can bring forth grace into our lives and the lives of those around us, or we can allow sin to damage us. Will we mess up, and will we say no sometimes? Of course. But that doesn’t mean we should give up! If we say no or if we fail even to see the choice in the first place, we can still receive God’s forgiveness and restoration. God will always give us another chance. And with every yes that we say to him, his Spirit will strengthen us further for the next choice. And the next one. And the next one. Maybe the “angel” who presents you with a choice today will come disguised as a co-worker or as a child asking for your help in the middle of a busy day. Maybe the angel will wear the distressing disguise of the poor or a disagreeable neighbor. Recognize your choice: will you say yes to God and give of yourself to this person? Will you become a bearer of grace to that person? “Heavenly Father, you have chosen me and filled me with your grace. Help me say yes to you and make a difference in the world around me.” Genesis 3:9-15, 20; Psalm 98:1 1 Like |
