for long, there has been a running battle in the field of medical knowledge as to the real cause of diarrhoea in infants. health professionals believe that it is due in large part to poor sanitation/hygiene while the local population believe it has to do with teething in infants.

because of this belief, parents don't bring their young ones to hospital in time until it gets really serious and life threatening. but the most worryint thing now is that even health professionals(many nurses and some doctors) do believe that diarrhoea is due to teething in infants. studies have shown no strong relationship btw teething and diarrhoea but this belief remains.

what are your thoughts? express them freely. and if possible indicate if u are a parent, health worker(Dr,nurse,pharmacist,dentist,, etc) student etc.

Diahrrhoea in infants is also indicated in Diarrheal Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome (D+ HUS). Ongoing research suggests that at least some percentage of HUS cases are familial: congenital conditions caused by genetic mutations. Verotoxin-producing E.coli (VTEC) also causes diarrhoea in infants.

Shouldn't you maybe restrict the title to teething and poor sanitation because there are other causes of diarrhoea in infants?

i know there are other causes of diarrhoea in infants but there is this belief in certain quarters that diarrhoea in infants is due to teething.now this has generated a public health problem because if people believe that diarrhoea in infants is a normal event during teething they wont consider it a serious problem that deserves medical attention and as such the ailment worsens until the life of the child is threatened by which time the prognosis is very poor with subsequent high mortality.

i just wanted to sample opinion of the people concerning this belief about teething and diarrhoea especially these days that it has been shown that a lot of health workers believe in the association between diarrhoea and teething.

I am a health worker and to the best of my knowlegde I am unaware of any published studies that connect teething to diarrhoea (could be wrong) I certainly was not taught so, in Nigeria its certainly more of a hygeine issue, I'm sure

There are many situations that can result in diarrhea in children which are more important than teething. Proper and immediate attention should be paid to diarrhea in children and help should be sought as soon as they arise as diarrhea in infants can be rapidly fatal.
The association between teething and diarrhea in infant is basically a hygiene issue. The incidence is not as high in the high socioeconomic group with clean environment. Around the age of 6month when a child started bringing the first set of teeth, they are crawling and the tendency for them is to pick objects from the floor and straight into the mouth, they are likely to pick up dropped food item. Introduction of bacteria into the intestinal system gives rise to such diarrhea.
The emerging tooth make an "opening" in the gum through which bacteria introduced into the mouth as such can have access into the circulatory system to cause diarrhea and fever etc.

NORMAL TEETHING SHOULD NOT BE ACCOMPAINIED BY DIARRHEA OR ANY OTHER CONSTITUTIONAL SYMPTOMS

In a developing country like Nigeria, a large number of cases of acute diarrhea in children of age (0-5 years) keep on occurring and often lead to referred from rural health centres to tertiary Health facility for proper care because it may prove fatal (Synder, 2007).
