The rate of unemployment is alarming in this part of the world, and it is shameful and pathetic that the government seems to be clueless on how to tackle this menace called unemployment.
The Rate Of Unemployment Is UnacceptableOne of Nigeria’s senators, Sen. Bukola Saraki of Kwara has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on unemployment in the country in order to enhance peace and security in the country. He said this while speaking at a one-day technical summit for unemployed youths in the state.
According to the senator, state of emergency has been declared in the power and water sectors among others, and it has worked out well.
“We still need to do more as even one percent rate is unacceptable as there cannot be any stability, peaceful environment and prosperity of any sort with youth unemployment,” he said

The Governor of Kwara state, Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed supported the lawmaker on his call for the State of emergency on youth unemployment.
“As the largest component of our population and the inheritors of the future, youths are our most vital resource. We must nurture, support, and prime them for productive engagement through appropriate training and tangible opportunities,” he said.
Not too long, a source that works for the government declared that there were more than 40 million Nigerians currently unemployed. This figure is not only frightening but saddening
Many people have questioned the Jonathan’s regime, they believe the government is lackadaisical in its fight against unemployment, and argue that the high rate of unemployment among the youths is the reason behind security insurgency, poor economic growth and low standard of living.
The Rate Of Unemployment Is UnacceptableThe president responded to similar criticism by creating a body named Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) and appointed Mr. Christopher Kolade as the head of the body; it is aimed at the empowerment of the citizens through job creation and infrastructure development. This body with its scheme is yet to embrace success, as the current employment rate is nothing better.
Many Nigerians have publicly argued that this body headed by Mr. Kolade is another plan of looting the public fund. So far, the body is yet to give a good account of it. However, it will be too early to write off Sure-P’s schemes, as the body admits it is facing some challenges in meeting its demands and it is working enormously in facing these challenges.
