Tragedy struck at an upscale New Jersey mall on Sunday night when a 30-year-old New Jersey man died after being shot in the head during a violent carjacking.

According to reports, Dustin Friedland, a 30-year-old patent attorney from Hoboken, New Jersey, was returning with his wife Jamie to their Range Rover in the car park at The Mall At Short Hills when two men approached them, fired shots and fled in the 2012 vehicle.

The shooting occurred at about 9:10 p.m. and Friedland was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m after being rushed to the hospital. His wife was unharmed, although she was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Panicked authorities briefly placed the mall on lock-down, which lasted for 30 minutes. Some shoppers could even hear the terrifying ordeal as it occurred on the garage’s third floor near Nordstrom.

The couple's car was recovered in Newark on this Monday morning and police are still looking for the two carjackers.
