A drug can be regarded as a substance with the potential to prevent/diagnose and treat diseases or to enhance physical or mental well being. Drugs can be naturally occurring or synthetic.
Drug Abuse is simply the use of illegal drugs or the inappropriate use of legal drugs.Apart from cocaine, heroine, amphetamine, other commonly abused drugs include
CODEINE-this is very common among students, especially the abuse of codeine-based cough syrups. Abusers purchase large quantities of cough syrups from patent medicine stores claiming that they are afflicted with cough related conditions. They often swallow the content of a bottle of cough syrup in one go or mix it with alcohol..beware of those red plastic cups!!!Abuse of codeine poses a risk of
depression and death. The risk is
increased with concurrent abuse of
alcohol.
HYPNOSEDATIVES-(especially Valium, Lexotan, Ativan )Although these are controlled drugs, they are commonly abused by adults especially by people with sleeping problems and young people with crazy motives.
PENTAZOCIN injection- This drug is a powerful but potentially additive analgesic which is used for severe pains resulting from conditions like sickle cell crisis, post surgical procedures, etc.Although,a strictly controlled drug, Sicklers who “self medicate” are potential addicts to this drug.
POSTINOR 2-Postinor-2 is an emergency contraceptive only. Postinor-2 is not intended as a regular method of contraception.Users are adviced not to use the emergency contraceptives more than twice in a 28-day period.Commonly abused by young ladies..or how do u explain a 17years old girl coming for prostinor 2 every friday night.
PARACETAMOL-is such a popular pain killer that it
almost became the victim of its own success.
When patients are asked “do you have any pain
killers at home?”, they often shrug when
answering: “not really, just ordinary Paracetamol”.
Lots of people consider it so common that it
cannot really be much good. Or is it?Commonly abused by most people, some take more than the recommended dose self. One of the main attractions of paracetamol is
that it has few side-effects.This does not mean
that paracetamol can be taken with impunity,
because there are possible side-effects, and
they can be devastating!
One of them is liver failure.
