There was a story of two traveling angels who got to a town and decided to pass the night there. They approached a wealthy family, who, unfortunately, was rude and refused them access to the guest room. They were, instead, given a space in the cold basement. The older angel later noticed a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel requested to know why the repair, particularly because of the treatment they received,
he replied: “Things aren’t always what they seem.” The next night, they went to a poor farmer’s house
who received them hospitably. The farmer and his wife shared with them the little food they had and even vacated their bed for the angels to have a good night rest. In the morning, the couple saw their only cow whose milk was their sole income, dead. They wept and the younger angel, who was infuriated as well, confronted the older angel and demanded to know why he allowed the couple’s cow to die. The older angel explained: “Things aren’t always what they seem. When we stayed in the basement of the wealthy family’s mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I
gave the angel of death the cow instead.”
