A 17-year-old household has forcefully delivered a six months old baby at Utak Street, off Nkemba Street, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The girl was employed three months ago by a busy working class single
mum to help take care of her 2-year-old daughter.

Recently, while the lady was engrossed with a TV programme, her daughter needed attention and she called the help more than three times and the help kept responding that she was in the toilet.

When it became unnecessarily too long, she tiptoed into the help’s room and opened the toilet door.

To her horror, she met the help squatting with blood all over the bathroom with a stillborn newly delivered baby hanging in-between her legs. She screamed and ran out of her apartment into the street.

The entire neighbourhood came out and it took the intervention of neighbours to calm her down. The neighbours also helped rushed the help to the hospital.

While in the hospital, she refused treatment and claimed she drank herbs and was given some to insert in her vagina to force the baby out. The help said she was warned not to allow orthodox medical treatment.

When asked, the help explained that the pregnancy was six months old. Her employer said she didn’t know she was pregnant as she is a very slim girl and she thought that the small protruding tummy was just an evidence of good living with her. She was smart in discharge of her duties, so there was nothing to suspect.

The help was sent parking afterward

The day Nigeria/Nigerians will start recognizing and respecting single mothers like other countries do, that will be one solution to Nigeria's many social and moral problems including risky abortions, husband-snatching, and adultery. This is not feminism rather simple reasoning. Life belongs to God and shouldn't be taken by anyone. Most girls who take these risks to abort babies only do so to avoid how society will treat them as out-of-wedlock moms. While the 'holier-than-thou' preachers who condemn single parents are the same people who get these girls pregnant and give them money to abort. A young lady made a mistake and took in does not mean she is a bad girl, and abandoned by family or ostracized. The man responsible should be made to support the baby, and the baby given a chance to live like u and me. Period! I'm not saying this because I'm Catholic. It's the right thing to give every child the right to live. Planet Earth belongs to no one but God, therefore, nobody has the right to decide who lives here or not except God Himself!

^^ Well said.

In addition to that, having frank discussions about sex (sex education), contraceptives, a less conservative (prudish) attitude to sex and safe (non-abortive) alternatives after pregnancy (e.g: adoption), will go a long way towards avoiding scenarios like these.

Disgusting article.

She had a choice and she made it. It was not a do or die affair.
