SaharaReporters has learnt that Nigeria’s Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, will be forced to leave his post in March, 2014, two months before the formal expiration of his tenure. Two sources at the Presidency and a source at the Central Bank told SaharaReporters that Mr. Sanusi has been ordered to proceed on a post-retirement leave in March. All three sources concluded that the early exit for the CBN henchman was occasioned by Mr. Sanusi’s recent leaked letter to President Goodluck Jonathan detailing the theft of close to $50 billion in oil proceeds by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Last week, Mr. Sanusi revised the figure of missing funds down to $12 billion, but the damage to the Jonathan Presidency is considered massive.

SaharaReporters learnt that Mr. Jonathan has concluded plans to speedily replace the CBN governor whom the president believes set out to embarrass his government. “[President] Jonathan thinks that Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has been making erratic pronouncements recently calculated to demean the office of the President,” said a source in the Presidency.

Presidency officials accused the CBN governor of leaking a private letter written to President Jonathan in which Nigeria’s chief banker complained about fraud perpetrated by officials of the NNPC and the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke. Ms. Alison-Madueke is extremely close to the president and is believed to be the arrowhead of Mr. Jonathan’s corrupt schemes, especially in the oil sector.

One of the sources at the Presidency told SaharaReporters that, although Mr. Sanusi’s allegations were substantially accurate, the CBN governor was forced to back down from the more damaging aspects of his claims after the president’s associates threatened to make an issue of his reckless spending and philandering. “Once Sanusi found out that the Presidency was determined to deal with him, both through the media and by instigating the EFCC to look into his spending habits, he was willing to retreat and to accept an early departure,” said our source.

Shortly after the CBN governor was effectively blackmailed and brought under control, he appeared before the Nigerian Senate and reversed his position, claiming that the NNPC was only unable to reconcile $12 billion of crude oil sale earnings.

It was shortly after Mr. Sanusi’s Senate appearance that President Jonathan ordered that the CBN governor’s retirement should be fast-tracked. Mr. Sanusi, who is believed to nurse an ambition to become the next Emir of Kano, had publicly stated that he does not intend to stay for another term.

His term as Nigeria’s Central Bank governor is due to expire in May 2014.

SaharaReporters has learnt that Nigeria's Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, will be forced to leave his post in March, 2014, two months before the formal expiration of his tenure.

Two sources at the Presidency and a source at the Central Bank disclosed to SaharaReporters that Mr. Sanusi has been ordered to proceed on a post-retirement leave in March.

According to all the sources, the early exit for the CBN henchman is occasioned by Mr. Sanusi's recent leaked letter to President Goodluck Jonathan detailing the theft of close to $50 billion in oil proceeds by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Last week, Mr. Sanusi revised the figure of missing funds down to $12 billion, but the damage to the Jonathan Presidency is considered massive.

It was also gathered that Mr. Jonathan has concluded plans to speedily replace the CBN governor whom the president believes set out to embarrass his government.

"[President] Jonathan thinks that Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has been making erratic pronouncements recently calculated to demean the office of the President," said a source in the Presidency.

Presidency officials accused the CBN governor of leaking a private letter written to President Jonathan in which Nigeria's chief banker complained about fraud perpetrated by officials of the NNPC and the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke. If Sanusi has any decency left, he should just resign his position. That letter is a clear indication that he intends to embarrass the FGN. You don't write such a letter when investigations have not been carried out. It damages your reputation and calls into question all other information he has released. How many of them were false or deliberately exaggerated to achieve a desired reaction.

That is a foolish statement to make. How would u say, he ought not to write a letter before investigation. Is the letter addressed to u? How will investigation be conducted if he didnt write the letter. The purpose of the letter was for the presidency to investigate the inconsistency. What u should worry urself about is how and why did the letter leak?

From my comments over the last couple of years, you will all know that I am anti bad governance whether by PDP or APC. However, it is wrong for Sanusi Lagido Sanusi the CBN governor to have leaked that letter, it is very wrong and even felonious and treasonable. Sanusi ought to have resigned except he can prove that the letter was leaked by presidency officials.

But first of all, have you tried this site http:///19rcMQj ? You will be will excited. Small change to pay recurrent bills outside the national, state or personal budget.

In sane society, the entire people, the opposition, the ruling party, professional bodies all will collectively call for the sack of the man or force him out. The said letter, first of all should embarass the CBN governor. How'll we still rely on his competence and abandon our national wealth on a man who cannot trace how our country's 2years budget allegedly got unaccounted for within just 18months! It's rather the Presidency that should write the CBN seeking the information the CBN had asked from the Presdidency. Whether he hopes to achieve something greater than just investigation or clarifications only him and his friends call tell.

In a sane society, the opposition, ruling party, professional bodies, student groups and the entire people will collectively call for the withdrawal of the services of the CBN governor 'cause his letter betrays his incopetence and confusion. How can we continue to rely our national wealth in the hands of a man who cannot trace or monitor the whereabouts of our 2years national budget in just 18months! It's the President that should write the Bank seeking the information and clarification CBN had requested from the President in that infamous letter. Whether Sanusi had other superior intents he wanted to achieve with that letter only him and his clique can tell.
As for the SR, we've heard the conspiracy theory. No problem. When the chicken crosses the road then we'll get back to the why, when and how.

In politics we call it sabotage, some actions are best taken for the interest of the nation, why would Sanusi be bad-mouthing the same government he's serving within.

He should have at least down play the situation, rather than over heating the polity, and now trying to make amends.

Serves him right.

So whether Sanusi is been forced to retire early or not, his allegations are SUBSTANTIALLY ACCURATE yet things continue as normal in Nigeria undecided undecided
For those saying Sanusi should not have leaked the letter, I do not agree due to the MASSIVE FRAUD been perpetuated under Ebele Jonathan who folds his hands akimbo and looks the other way
Do you know how much is $50 billion or even this new figure of $10.8 billion? angry angry
BTW Sanusi had written this letter as at early September yet the Presidency had not deemed it fit to act or pretend to act till it became public knowledge in mid December shocked shocked
No matter how damaging it might have been to the presidency, how come they never made to act till it became public knowledge ?
Leave story jo!

Sharrap there!

12 billion $ is still unaccounted for. We all knw sanusi was forcrd to even reduce the figure to that amount. Mr president's enemies live and eat with him. They leaked the letter in the 1st place. The corruption infested woman okonjo still had no shame to be arguing with reps that its 10 billion $ and not 12. We are not talking about naira here you know....what a facked up government. Madam bullet proof is till in his cabinet too, he's looking for a way to remove the CBN governor despirately.
