Fashola Commissions Kodesho, Simbiat Abiola Roads by Ayekotoo(m): 11:38pm On Dec 27, 2013
LAGOS State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola yesterday commissioned two roads in Ikeja with a warning to auto dealers to desist from displaying their vehicles on the walkways.
Fashola shortly before cutting the tapes on Kodesho Road and Simbiat Abiola Way also warned against roadside hawking.
The governor said trading on the roads poses great inconvenience to road users as long hours of productive time is wasted in gridlock.
He pointed out that staying too long in traffic logjam had serious health implications, which could lead to accidents, hypertension and stress.
According to him, “As long as we turn our roads to shopping malls where everybody buys in traffic, we all pay the price as those who sell on the roads and those who don’t sell spend hours in traffic and you know that cause stress and hypertension.
“Now while I was driving down here I saw those who want to sell cars on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way and other areas have turned sections of the highway into showrooms.
“I am using this opportunity to tell them to get land where they can display and sell their cars. If we want to be great people, we don’t turn our highway into car shops. “And whether you sell computers, electronics or whatever this is a mega city, you can sell your goods at the markets, the malls, but you can’t sell on the highway”.
The governor explained that his administration is committed to completing 200 inner city roads, pointing out construction work is on-going in Shomolu, Epe and others area of the state.
Fashola said, “Just recently, we handed over 16 roads in Mushin. And the work in Ikeja is not finished. Work is still ongoing on Joel Ogunaike, Isaac John and couple of other roads. All of those 200 roads and the 25 news roads we awarded few days ago.
“They will be finished because our capacity to complete them hasn’t diminished. I promise to serve you till the last day of this administration. The most important is for all of us to know the reason why the government builds roads.”
“We don’t build because we want to but because roads are defining means for our way of life. Roads should help us get to our business places, work and help our children get to school quickly. And where the roads function the cost of transportation will reduce because travelling should be a pleasant experience”.
