• Not For Political Witch-hunt

• Members Trained By Israeli Team

PLATEAU State Governor, Jonah Jang, has explained reasons behind the establishment of Operation Rainbow, the state’s security taskforce.

He said the idea was borne out of his personal safety consciousness and the need to counter activities of insurgents in the state.

Jang, who stated this last week at the graduation of trainees of the outfit, said the initiative is meant to enhance communities’ ability to protect themselves against violent threats.

He hoped the self-defence and response techniques the trainees acquired have prepared them for emergency situations.

Coordinator of the outfit, Air Vice Marshal Bala Danbaba (rtd) denied insinuations that the outfit will be used to witch-hunt perceived opponents of the Jang administration.

One thousand individuals completed the training course, which was administered by the International Security Academy (ISA) of Israel.

The governor said: “There is no doubt that the rate of violent crimes, terrorist attacks as well as natural catastrophes have increased. Nigerians have been experiencing the trauma of repeated violent attacks and bloodshed.

“Plateau State, in particular, has been at the centre of communal clashes. We have been through a series of crises, which led to senseless violence and bloodshed in recent times. Up till this moment, the rural communities are still attacked occasionally while homes, farms and other valuables are burnt and destroyed.”

He pointed out that when President Jonathan approved the proposal to establish the apparatus, as the state’s Special Task Force on Peace and Security, there was high expectation that it would restore normalcy and peace to the state.

To the trainees, Jang said: “As neighbourhood watch operatives, you are part of the arm through which Operation Rainbow hopes to extend its frontiers to every nook and cranny of the state. I fully support the vision and proposals, which led to your recruitment. I also identify with the ambitious training programmes for members.”

The governor reminded them that the state has spent huge resources to give they the best training and prepare them as part of the state’s peace and security task force. He urged them to put the knowledge imparted to work in their various communities.

He said the state government would continue to promote training and skill enhancement programmes to sustain the operation.

Jang defends establishment Plateau Security Taskforce trained by Isreali team

Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, has explained the establishment of Operation Rainbow, the state’s security task force.

He said the idea became necessary due to activities of insurgents in the state, a situation which according to him, threatened peace and development.

Speaking on Friday at the graduation of trainees of the outfit, the Governor urged them to use the self-defence and response techniques acquired during emergency situations.

“There is no doubt that the rate of violent crimes, terrorist attacks as well as natural catastrophes have increased. Nigerians have been experiencing the trauma of repeated violent attacks and bloodshed.

“Plateau State, in particular, has been at the centre of communal clashes. We have been through a series of crises, which led to senseless violence and bloodshed in recent times.

“Up till this moment, the rural communities are still attacked occasionally, while homes, farms and other valuables are burnt and destroyed”, he stated.

He recalled that when President Goodluck Jonathan approved the proposal to establish the apparatus, as the state’s Special Task Force on Peace and Security, there was high expectation that it would restore normalcy and peace to the state.

Jang, therefore, told the trainees that “as neighbourhood watch operatives, you are part of the arm through which Operation Rainbow hopes to extend its frontiers to every nook and cranny of the state.

“I fully support the vision and proposals, which led to your recruitment. I also identify with the ambitious training programmes for members”.

The Governor reminded them that the state had spent huge resources to give them the best training and prepare them as part of the state’s peace and security task force.

He urged them to put the knowledge acquired to work in their various communities.

In his remark, Coordinator of the outfit, Air Vice Marshal Bala Danbaba (rtd) denied insinuations that the outfit would be used to witch-hunt perceived opponents of the Jang administration.

One thousand individuals completed the training course, which was administered by the International Security Academy (ISA) of Israel.

The commom pattern now is to assemble thugs and ex-convicts, give them training in weapon handling, provide them with uniform and state recognition, use them for political oppression and elections. Thereafter, they fall out with the governor or his successor who later branded as terrorists. They go back to re-group and unleash more havoc on the citizens. The FG becomes angry, declare state of emergency and orders shoot at sight; forgetting that he granted the governor the permission to set up the taskforce !

This is exactly how boko haram started, so I oppose any form of armed vigilante in the north.

Many States such as kano, zamfara, have already implemented this measure to checkmate security challenges since the police can not adequately protect the rural dwellers from incessant attacks, i wonder what took Plateau so long to provide its indigenes with security.

They said No to state police yet goes behind to establish state police indirectly. Let Governor Amaechi establish something like this now every Nigerian will open his/her mouth to talk. What our so called leaders refused to understand is that, there is no going back on democracy and true federalism in nigeria if we must survive as a nation. Just like what the former president of the USA, Bill Clinton said that " globalisation is irresistable". So is state police and true federalism in Nigeria

Your post aptly describes a trend which has come to stay. It is Plateau state today, but give a few months and we'll be back here discussing a new paramilitary outfit - instituted in a different state.

Southern govs, Jang fault North on state police

AUGUST 1, 2012

Southern governors have taken a swipe at their northern counterparts for making a U-turn on their call for state police.

The NGF had, in a communiqué after its meeting in Abuja on June 24, urged the Federal Government to urgently consider the creation of state police as a solution to the state of violence in the country.

It also demanded a special fund to fight insecurity in the North.

But the northern governors on Friday backtracked on their earlier call when they rejected the clamour for state police, saying the country was not ripe for it.

Instead of state police, the northern governors, in their meeting presided over by Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu in Abuja on Friday, demanded the strengthening of the police.

However, governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo), Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta) and Babatunde Fashola (Lagos) criticised the NGF for shifting its position.

They were supported by Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang, a member of the NGF.
