This is third meeting between the pair in
three seasons thanks to the FA Cup, with
Oldham pulling off a major upset last
time out.
Liverpool seem far more assured this
season, and despite a difficult festive
period where they dropped from first to
fifth and back into the top four following
victory against Hull on New Year’s Day,
Brendan Rodgers will not be hoping for
a repeat of last year’s result with the
Reds clear favourites to progress to the
next round and attempt to win the
competition for the first time since 2006.
Whilst things are going well for the
Merseyside club in the league, things are
not going as well for Oldham who sit 19
in League One level on points with
Crewe who occupy the final relegation
spot.
Lee Johnson’s side are on a run of no
league wins in six – three draws and
three losses - however, the Latics did
overcome League Two outfit Mansfield
4-1 in a second round replay midway
through December to set up this
weekend’s tie and offer a welcome
distraction from the league.
Rodgers may decide to rotate his line-up
for this clash after four games in 12 days,
although his side must be wary that in
the previous two meetings Oldham have
gone ahead twice, winning one but
eventually losing 5-1 in 2012.
