Some Nigerian youths, representing more than 80 per cent of the country's youth population, are unemployed while another 1.6 million or 10% are under-employed, according to the Minister of Youth Development, Akinlabi Olasunkanmi.

The Minister gave the grim statistics at a stakeholders' meeting on youth employment generation in the capital city of Abuja Tuesday.

``According to the 2006 provisional census figure, Nigeria has a youth population of 80 million or 60 per cent of her total population (of 140 million),'' the Minister said.

``Of this population, more than 80 per cent are unemployed while about 10 per cent are under-employed,'' he added.

He also said only 10% of graduates released into the labour market annually by universities and other tertiary institutions in the country were able to get paid employment.

The high unemployment rate of the nation's youths has been blamed for the rise of such vices as armed robbery, cultism, hostage taking, drug and child trafficking as well as prostitution, among others.
