Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited has said that it wants to be a vehicle for the transformation of Nigeria into a buoyant technology-based economy in the 21 century, explaining that this formed the basis for the programme it outlined at the time it commenced operations last year.

The Managing Director of NigComSat, Dr. Ahmed Rufai, said given Nigeria’s current position economically and technologically, a lot of investment still needed to be done in terms of human capital and infrastructural development for the country to compete with the rest of the world.

He said, Africa as a whole and Nigeria in particular was particularly backward compared to the rest of world. According to him, while in Luxembourg, consisting of only 450,000 persons had 2.5 gigabytes of bandwidth available, Africa with 96m people had just about 1.5gigabytes.

He said this reality explained the basis for the firm’s plans to offer additional services that would quicken the pace of access of the Nigerian people to technology services that would improve lives.

Under the programme, he said NigComSat planned to establish 10 telecentres in every state in the country to improve e-learning. He said a special partnership had been struck with the World Bank that would offer Nigerians access to information technology certification courses like Oracle for abut N15,000. He said today, such courses were going for about N200,000 noting that this was a barrier to many students.

He said in the area of space technology NigComSat was training 50 more Nigerian engineers in addition to the first 15 that were trained earlier.

He said the firm could not even meet local demand if it was patronised stating that plan by Galaxy Backbone to install 5000 VSATs across the country would require more bandwidth than it could provide. According to him, this situation explained how large the market was for satellite service in Nigeria.

Rufai, added that NigComSat’s satellite was its one of the best in orbit today and was superior to others that have their footprint over the country
