Man kills in-law, six others in Yobe

Written by Hamza Idris, Damaturu, on 27-08-2008 00:00

A middle aged man in Jakusko Local Government Area of Yobe State on Monday killed his father in-law, two members of his immediate family and four other people.
Sources said the man (names withheld) went on rampage at the Jakusko Local Government Secretariat, about 200km away from Damaturu, the state capital and matcheted all the seven people. Three died on the spot while the rest gave up in hospital while receiving treatment.

The man, who was in the payroll of the local government, is said to be mentally derailed and was aggrieved recently because he has not been allowed to collect his salaries in the past few months.

Workers in both the state and local government areas are undergoing screening with a view to identifying ghost workers and those with questionable credentials.
Yobe State police commissioner, Moses Anegbode, who spoke to newsmen yesterday in Damaturu, confirmed that three people died on the spot, adding that the suspect had been arrested and would be brought to the state police headquarters.

Sources said the suspect took a machete to the secretariat and met his unsuspecting victims separately and inflicted various degrees of injuries on them.

"I cannot confirm whether the people that died have a hand in his inability to collect his salaries or not", one of the sources said.

Police Commissioner Anegbode said it took the efforts of so many people to restrain the assailant. "The suspect equally got injured when people descended on him to stop him from his nefarious act", he said.

He said everything was under control and that the police had commenced investigation into the matter. He called on the people not to take law into their own hands. "Every person is responsible for his own act", the commissioner said.
