The National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an alarm over the circulation of fake infant formula, SMA Gold packaged in 450g cans, by some unscrupulous individuals in some parts of the country.

According to the Special Assistant to the Director-General of the agency, Mrs. Elizabeth Awagu, the adulterated baby food was circulated in Lagos, Ibadan and Kano. The NAFDAC official also revealed that laboratory analysis of the baby food showed that its microbial level was higher than that of a normal infant formula.

Sequel to the discovery, NAFDAC has warned nursing mothers against buying the fake SMA Gold infant formula considering the fact that a baby fed with the fake product could develop diarrhea, dehydration and fever. Investigations have already begun by both the regulatory agency and the sole distributor of the product in Nigeria and West Africa, EIL Services Nigeria Limited.

Meanwhile, the company has reassured the public that the situation is under control while it joined forces with NAFDAC, pharmacists, wholesalers, retailers and other respectable organizations to ensure that the counterfeiters and their intermediaries are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
The adulterated product bears the batch number 6J02SG06 while the original product bears 6J025G06.

We commend the officials of NAFDAC and all those who brought this evil act to the notice of the consuming public. The act of counterfeiting food products is wicked particularly in infants who are invariably the hope for the future.
