Soji-Eze Fagbemi, Abuja - 15.09.2008

University workers across the country will from tomorrow begin a nationwide strike over the issues of monetisation arrears, 65 years retirement age and the unresolved new salary structure.

Already, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has directed its members to stay at home as from tomorrow, following its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja, at the weekend and a letter to the Federal Government to this effect.

SSANU said the first phase of the strike in all the universities across the country would begin with a three-day warning strike on Tuesday, so as to press home their demands for the payment of the two-year monetisation arrears, resolve the already negotiated issues of their new salary structure and 65 years retirement age.

In a letter with reference number SSANU/NS/SGF/45/06, entitled “3- Day warning strike,” and addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, the association said the strike would take effect tomorrow and affect all administrative processes, including registrations, bursary, accounting, admission and new intakes, those going on NYSC, as well as examinations and records.

Signed by SSANU President, Comrade Promise Adewusi, copies of the letter were sent to the Minister of Education, Dr. Aja-Nwhachukwu; Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Hassan Lawal; Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC); the Senate President, Speaker House of Representatives, and all the vice-chancellors in Nigerian universities.

The letter, dated September 12, 2008, read in part: “Following our notice of strike action dated August 19, 2008, addressed to the Minister of Education, we regret to inform you that as a result of the insensitivity of government officials and agencies to the plight of our members and their inability to resolve the issues in contention within the notice period, SSANU-NEC at its emergency meeting of September 12, 2008, resolved to go on a three-day warning strike with effect from Tuesday, September 16, 2008.”
