AT least, twenty suspected robbers have been apprehended by the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta MEND in Ondo State two weeks after they allegedly invaded a divisional police station in Irele local government area of the state.

It will be recalled that some youths suspected to be militants from Akotogbo in Irele local government area of Ondo had two weeks ago invaded a divisional police station in Irele and carted away all the arms and ammunition found in the police station.

Speaking with newsmen, the spokesperson of MEND in the State, Mr. Ajija Bounanawei in a telephone conversation in Akure, said the group had also recovered 15 AK 47 guns and a large number of live ammunition from the suspects.

Bounanawei said they were arrested on Monday in the riverine area after a tip off from Ijaw youths and leaders from Arogbo. He vowed that the suspects would be left off the hook after due consultation with security operatives in the state.

According to him “We MEND members are ready to release the ammunitions and the suspected robbers to the relevant security agents to face the law after thorough consultation.” He described as unfortunate government accusations that MEND always master mind criminal activities in the coastal communities in the state.

According to him “the arrest of the suspected robbers had vindicated MEND members as law-abiding citizens in the state. “The presence of MEND in Ondo State and the country at large is to ensure justice, fair play and equity, we frown at criminal activities.”

The spokesperson, however, blamed the high rate of robbery operations in the coastal communities in the state to invasion of criminals from other neighboring states.

The police image maker in the state, Mr. Aremu Adeniran confirmed to Sunday Vanguard the invasion of the police station at Irele two weeks ago, but said he was yet to be briefed about the arrest of the hoodlums by any group.
