THE POLICE, WHY THE BRIBE?

It is common knowledge even among children as young as six years old that the police collects bribe (egunje). What they don’t know yet, but will soon find out because of their unquenchable guest for knowledge. Is that the Road Safety men, their brothers in corruption are also bribery experts and never before seen specialists.

The police public relations officers are not doing a good enough job on their part. I should be darned if I say I don’t know that their so called public relation men parade themselves around telling any body who cared to listen that the police is your friend. But utterly failed to constantly remind the police, that we the civilian are their friends and that they are to service to the people. Bail is free human rights activities shouted out to any Nigerian who would give his or her ear for a split second, the human rights activists in their never before seen total commitment to the improvement of the rights of the Nigerian masses. Went to great lengths to see to it that their pet dream come true in Nigeria, But by the by the police also went to great lengths to ensure that their hard work comes to nothing. By going a head to collect bail from Nigerians without court orders for things as common as Fraca.

For mankind sake this is not what we want our future generations to practice? So we must act and act real fast to bringing it to the barest minimum, if not totally eradicating it. Now where do we start? I suggest we start by franking telling the police inspector general, Mr. Mike Okiro to without delay tender his letter of resignation to the president. If he fail or are afraid to challenge, tackle and eventually eradicate corruption in the police and its affiliates in Nigeria. By the by there are some policemen who have proved themselves worthy of emulation, Worthy of being policemen. In their total commitment in service to the people, who I dare say deserved to be honoured with the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).

If they in all their wrongfulness don’t perform, then somebody tell me what we want then for if not to serve us. Afterall they are being paid with taxpayers hard earned money. The open confidence and calmness with which the men of the police force now extort money from transporters. Equaled with stoned silence from quarters of the police from where restraint is suppose to come. Suggest some cold facts: that either they in the police high command are getting a feel of the action I mean feed back or they simply can’t control the men vested on them by government.

I hereby call on all men and officers of the police, Road Safety, Customs and Immigration. Who are not ready to use their respective positions to effect discipline over one another and repaint good the Nigerian Image they damaged and stop portraying every single Nigerian that traveled out of the country as potential or criminal minded. Because of what they have made into an habit to resign their positions without delay and give way to those who are ready to make discipline and unreserved service to the people. Their Watchword. I am a total supporter of the police reform but not just the police, The customs and the immigration too under normal circumstances the policeman in order to effect his duties properly needed to be well paid, housed and properly dressed at work.

The police carrying long rifles about all the time looks barbaric and out dated. Folks believe me, if the police are well kitted. Say, they put on sleeves and wear a tie before putting on the black jacket, carry individual radio so as to be able to be in touch and get in touch at will, carry a pistol in place of that long jungle rifle and wear a good head gear like the ones only officers in the Nigerian Police wore. They would sweep Nigerians off their feet’s. Because everyone would definitely fall in love with the new police. And then the police would have the total respect of almost all Nigerians. Who said the American people love their police merely because they hardly lack in ensuring that justice is done.

But also because they are well dressed and good mannered and also respect the civilians rights, always never failing to inform a suspect of his right to an attorney and his right to remain silent if he don’t want to talk without his lawyer around, of his right to know that whatever he says could be used against him and will be used against in court.

Ever advising him or her of the need to get an attorney before giving any statement never failing to read out his or her rights to him or her or carrying out an arrest before asking anyone any question. This is where the Nigerian Police failed and will continue to fail until they stop recruiting illiterate’s. And stop making the police recruits at the training camps go through dehumanizing treatments. That is where the system becomes scary. Why? on earth will a sane man dehumanize someone and expect this same person to go out and not dehumanize people? I take it upon myself to believe the system called the police is a system totally crazy, for how on earth will you dehumanize someone and expert that someone to observe human rights, someone you definitely know will at the end of the day work among sane humans?.

It won’t work, it can’t work, it is not working. So I advice that the government shelve the whole rubbish called dehumanization and start training them (the recruits) to observe the rights of the people to whom they eventually will go serve. To stop thinking that they are above the law and that the people are at their service. To always charge matters to court before twenty-four hours elapse and to know that they had no right to detain any body without trial. But by the by the Nigerian Police would coax and trick one into making statements without informing the person of his rights and proceed to use it against this same person.

It is not fair at all and never had been fair all along.

The federal government should be made to know that they are abusing the very human rights of the men and women who enroll for police service and therefore be dehumanization of our young men and women. Our young men and women who intent to enroll or who are all ready going through this insensitive and cruel damage that is being done to them under the cruel joke of training, should know that the damage that they have experience or about to experience will outlive them.

Therefore they must stand up in unison and drag the government to court. So as to abolish this wicked gesture that is been unleashed on them by government.

That, I believe is the only way our future generation will be saved from being turn from sane and sensible people to semi deranged and cruel people.

So when next a police man goes mad and shoot someone or brutalize someone due to gross insensitivity then Nigerians must know that there are some of the skills he acquired from his passage through the through the dehumanization process. We should know were to point fingers and accuse the federal government of Nigerian.

In recent time, the Lagos State Governor Mr. Babatunde Fashola advised that street urchin’s and robbers who are not ready to quit their dastardly trade to leave the state, an opportunity arose and as usual with crooked-minded police men was quickly utilize to extort money from member’s of the public men who choose to wear dread-locks for the men and low waist pants for women; some people most of whom live legally were forced to part with hard-earned money.

Am not saying that hoodlums or people disturbing the peace were not detected and arrested using this method, but how about situations where people provided good-enough proof of their means of livelihood and are advised or forced to part with money or land in police station with triumphed-up charge’s.

We will have a better society if the police will be honest to us and live up to their responsibilities. Nigerian’s sure will show them real love and learn to trust them completely.
