A 28-year-old Russian female, who visited Dubai on a tourist visa, and a 30-year-old male citizen of Lebanon, a salesman in a local store, were put on trial for drinking juice in a public place in the daytime during Muslim fasting.

The police caught the two people red-handed at a gas station in Dubai, Emirat.ru reports with reference to Gulf News.

In accordance with the Federal Penal Code of the United Arab Emirates, a public intake of food and beverages during daytime hours of the month of Ramadan is forbidden by Article 313. The article stipulates the punishment in the form of either a monetary penalty – up to 2,000 dirhems ($555) – or even a term of up to one month in prison.

The young people told the court that they were not Muslims and were thus unaware of the fact that their actions could be punishable.

The court took the mitigating circumstances into consideration, but found the defendants guilty, since ignorance did not exclude responsibility. The court ruled that the young people must pay the fine of 1,000 dirhems ($278) each.

The case became the first one in Dubai in violation of Article 313 since the beginning of the month of Ramadan on September 1.

Thousands of foreigners from Europe and Asia reside in the emirate of Dubai, the major tourist center of the Persian Gulf . Dubai is known as a relatively liberal region in comparison with other territories of the UAE. Tourists can be seen in the streets wearing shorts, whereas alcoholic beverages can often be available in bars and hotels.

This year, however, the authorities intend to remind all residents and guests of the emirate that they are staying on the territory of a Muslim country. There have been quite a number of incidents recently when the local police in plain clothes arrested women sunbathing topless, nudists and other violators of public order.

Many tourists acknowledge that that they do not always understand how they should behave in Dubai.

Guide-books advise tourists should always carry their IDs, or better their copies, with them for the majority of police officers wear plain clothes and can be rather meticulous in their inspections.

The original article in the link has the title: "Russian woman put on trial in Dubai for drinking juice in public". Why the provocative: "Islamists Gone Wild, "?

In any case, this is not wildness, to the extent that ignorance of the law is no protection against being accountable. The article is clear in stating the law:

In accordance with the Federal Penal Code of the United Arab Emirates, a public intake of food and beverages during daytime hours of the month of Ramadan is forbidden by Article 313. The article stipulates the punishment in the form of either a monetary penalty – up to 2,000 dirhems ($555) – or even a term of up to one month in prison.

An argument could be heard about whether the law is fair to foreigners, but would any reasonable person deny that the arrest is valid according to the law? Please, let's separate feelings from reason. This couple violated the law. They may tender a good plea, and justice may be tempered with extenuating circumstances, but please, let's banish the notion that this is a case of "Islamists gone wild, ", and in Dubai. And, clearly, this is what is reported to have happened:

The court took the mitigating circumstances into consideration, but found the defendants guilty, since ignorance did not exclude responsibility. The court ruled that the young people must pay the fine of 1,000 dirhems ($278) each.

So, what more could anyone want. When you're visiting a country, you've to obey the laws; you have to show respect; you're a visitor. There's at least a country where it's illegal to cross the road on foot if the light is Red, even if there's no vehicle or anything on wheels in sight (save for the policeman in some corner, or a camera, ); you get to pay a fine for this. Many people agree this is unreasonable. When visiting a place, learn the laws and behave well.

By making sensational statements, an opportunity to appeal to the authorities to consider a section of an expanding society could be lost. There's no point furthering the agenda of newspapers wishing to make some quick money by beclouding issues.

It is ironic how when Muslims are in other people's country, they always want their rights and religion protected, but they cannot respect the rights of others. For those who say the law has to be obeyed, it is a STUPID law especially if applied to people of other religions. There are many many laws in different countries that are just as stupid and there is no justification for their application. Hell, there is a law in Louisiana that It is illegal to gargle in public places. In another state, women should not cross the road on sundays (or something just as preposterous, I can't remember again), how stupid would it look if any of these were enforced? Because it is a law does not mean it should be enforced or upheld. Judges actually have the powers to declare a law bad or void, or to refuse to apply certain laws in specific circumstances.

There're "stupid" laws everywhere, and ill-conceived laws get overturned everytime, but almost certainly not by a judge. Is this law really unfair to non-Muslims? What's special about seeking a bit of respect during a national event; if you must eat, don't do it in a public place; what's oh-so stupid about that? Were the law unfair, surely, the way to go about effecting change isn't to start screaming "Islamists gone wild . . . " This Dubai law isn't stupid.

And, yes, it is quite distateful to write that Christians are stupid; the writer isn't known to be a Christian, and if the writer were, one could hardly make a reasonable generalization.
