A lab result says blood group Bplus and genotype AB. It sounded strange when I heared it so I googled it out. I saw there is actually an AB genotype just like others i ve not heared of before like BB,OO etc but it seems it common to the whites and the person in question is a full Nigerian. Test was carried out at a military hospital here in Nigeria.

I wanted to know if the genotype is a sickle carrier as we have some other uncommon carriers like AD,AE or a carrier of thallesemia it seems not so from my research online.


Anybody seen anyone of african descent with this sort of Lab result. Health professionals kindly help.

Hmmm, would have said yes there is, but the possibility there is a mistake is high in did case, most of not all Nigeria hospital lack the ability to diagnose any other haemogloibin apart from A,S,C and F.
Any haemoglobin genotype in adult that is not A is abnormal. So if ur genotype is AB as u stated , just consider it has AS, they have similar significance clinicaly

You can as well consider it as AS, just like someone with SC genotype considers himself SS. But do know that someone with AB is not a carrier of the 'sickle cell'. But nevertheless should still stick to an AA genotype Partner.
