Following the unreliable power source from the formerly Federal Government owned power utilities, private sector operators have taken the bull by the horn through generation of about 300 megawatts (MW) for their business operations.Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that about 20 privately-owned power plants ranging from 2MW to 114MW are operating off-grid.Although the cost of the various projects cannot be ascertained as at press time, but it was reliably gathered that Island Power Plant situated in Marina, Lagos State, with output of 10MW cost N2billion.Companies like Ewekoro Power Ltd is generating 12.5MW; Energy Company of Nigeria Ltd is generating 3MW for Nestle in Agbara, Ogun State; DIL Power Ltd generates 114MW for Dangote Cement factory in Ogun State; Coronation Power and Gas Ltd generates 20MW while Contour Global Solution Nigeria Ltd generates 7MW for NBC Bottling Plant in Benin, Edo State.Others are African Oxygen and Industrial Gases Ltd-19MW; Akute Power Ltd-13MW, CET Power Projects-38MW; Contour Global solutions-14MW; Ilupeju Power Plant-2MW; Income Electric Ltd-6MW; Island Power Ltd-10MW; PZ Power Company Ltd-4MW; Shoreline Power Company-9MW; Tower Power Abeokuta Ltd-40MW; Unipower Agbara Ltd-6MW and Wedotebary Nigeria Ltd-5MW.It is important to note that these investors generate the power for ‘private’ consumption and not necessarily transmitting it through the transmission lines. However, it was also established that most of the power generated by these operators were not fully utilised and they ended up as captive or embedded power. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Eko Distribution company, Dr. Oladele Amoda, recently told Nigerian Tribune that his company is considering taken up (purchasing) excessive power from some of these operators as embedded power and channel it through its networks to targeted power consumers.“We are in talks with Island Power plant and some others that have excess power that we can take up, pay for it and distribute to our institutional customers who are willing to pay for it,” he said. Power supply from the conventional sources through the grid have continue to fluctuate between 3000MW to 4000MW despite the privatisation of power sector.
