Germans settled there: German migration to Brazil began in earnest in 1824 (pictured) and around 260,000 Germans settled there, mainly in the south. A dialect known as Hunsrückish became the largest German dialect in the country. Others include Plautdietsch and Tyrol. This immigration made German the second most common language spoken at home in Brazil in the 1940 census.

German-Brazilians: Descendants of the early settlers are known as German-Brazilians. Model Gisele Bündchen is probably the most famous German-Brazilian.

It has a big beerfest: The city of Blumenau in the south of Brazil, which was founded by a German pharmacist in 1850, holds the world’s second biggest Oktoberfest each year, after Munich, with more than 500,000 visitors.

2014 is Brazil's 'Year of Germany': Ominously for the Brazilians, 2013/14 was named the "Year of Germany" in the country. It ended in May 2014 and featured 1,000 events including concert tours. President Gauck visited the country in 2013 (pictured) under the slogan "Germany and Brazil – Where Ideas Meet."

Lots of trade: In 2013, German exports to Brazil were worth around €11.4 billion. German imports from Brazil were €9 billion, putting Brazil in 20th place among countries importing goods from Germany and in 23rd place among exporters to Germany. Brazil’s main exports to Germany are iron ore, soya and coffee.

Top Nazis avoided justice there: Brazil was a notorious refuge for Nazis after World War II. Brazil had the largest fascist party outside of Europe in the 1930s and 1940s. Auschwitz Concentration Camp doctor Josef Mengele (pictured) evaded capture for decades and died in Brazil in 1979. Gustav Wagner, known as the "beast of Sobibor”, died in São Paulo. He was accused of complicity in murdering 152,000 Jews at Sobibor Concentration Camp.

VWs are built there: Volkswagen has a very strong presence in Brazil with a factory in Sao Bernardo do Campo. The last VW Type 2 camper van rolled off the production line in Brazil in December 2013.

Germany struggle against them: Germany has never beaten Brazil at football on Brazilian soil. In total, Brazil has beaten Germany 12 times, including in the 2002 World Cup final (pictured), and lost four. Five of the matches have ended in draws.

Ties are strengthening: Brazil is the only country in South America with which Germany has a “strategic partnership”. It was signed in 2008 on a visit by Chancellor Angela Merkel to increase cooperation between the two countries.
