The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, will be closed again Saturday, the second time in one week, for another round of runway repairs, the spokesperson for Nigeria’s aviation agencies, Yakubu Dati, has said.

The airport, one of Nigeria’s busiest, would be shut down for another 30 hours between Saturday, July 12 and Monday, July 14, Mr. Dati said in a statement issued in Abuja Tuesday.

“The second phase for the rehabilitation of the remaining section of the runway will hold for 30 hours between Saturday 12 (2300 UTC) and Monday 14 (0500 UTC), 2014,’’ the statement said.

It said the rehabilitation was being carried out in two phases to minimise the inconveniences the runway closure would have on air passengers and aircraft operators.

“A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) to this effect has already been sent to all aircraft pilots and other relevant stakeholders, informing them of the impending closure.

“The authority regrets the inconvenience the second closure of the runway, in one week would cause passengers and other stakeholders,’’ it said.

It said that reports from pilots who had used the runway so far indicated that the rehabilitation of a section of the runway was professionally executed.

The statement said the rehabilitation of the runway would enhance safety of flight operations.

It said the runway of the Abuja airport, which was closed for 30 hours for rehabilitation on July 5, was re-opened for flight operations on July 7.

The statement said that the conclusion of the maintenance work on the runway would guarantee enhanced flight safety on the runway.

President Jonathan has directed the immediate construction of a second runway for the airport.

I suspect the closures have been in reaction to anti-terrorism intelligence.

The UK and US airports have stepped up their security after what was described as, "credible" intelligence of a possible terrorist attack using airports/electronics. Basically, another 9/11.
