Following the plea by the new Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau to striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics to suspend their strike as negotiations continue, the union has finally suspended its 10 month strike.

The Union however noted that the strike is being suspended for a period of three months, after which it would reconsider its decision if the government does not show good faith.

The decision to suspend the action came Saturday following an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council in Abuja.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has suspended its nine-month strike.

The National President of ASUP, Mr Chibuzor Asomugha, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone on Saturday, said the polytechnic lecturers would resume work on Tuesday.

He explained that the strike had only been suspended for three months, an interlude the government is expected to meet the demands of ASUP.

The polytechnic lecturers began their strike on October 4, 2013.

9 months strike without any concrete achievement. What a pity. No wonder the FG always take the poly lecturers for a ride.

Meanwhile,many of the students must have gotten admission in other tertiary institutions. 10months is just too long to be out of school. I hope the rift between ASUP and FG is solved within the 3 months given to the latter. Enough of strikes please!
