More anti-impeachment protests have continued to rock much of Nasarawa State, with the groups getting larger when the protests entered day two, today.

Lafia, the state capital, witnessed much of the swift reaction by the people, who are raising their voices against the impeachment proceedings which 20 of the 24 members of Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA) commenced,on Monday.

The House,Monday, reconvened from an ongoing recess at an emergency session, and passed a motion of impeachment, alleging various breaches of the provisions of the constitution against Al-Makura, including misappropriation of funds from 2011 and 2014, as well as alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office processes. 20 of the 24 lawmakers, all of them of the PDP, signed the impeachment notice, containing 16-count charges, which copy is yet to be made public.

The lawmakers also passed a motion for the House to do substituted service on the governor if he could not be reached for service by the clerk who was so directed after the speaker, Musa Ahmed Mohammed ruled on the House proceedings which lasted about 12 minutes.
But protests which entered the second day, have continued to trail the action of the lawmakers.

As at today, Lafia, Keana, Toto and Nasarawa towns saw increasing numbers of people including women and youth groups, as well as elders, who held anti-impeachment placards as they poured into streets and major roads.
The protesters raised their voices against the plot, and warned that the execution of the planned impeachment will attract more anger from them.

In Lafia, major roads running through the town were taken over by the protesters, compelling shop owners and other businesses to close for the second day.

For the second time sinceWednesday, Honourable Mohammed Baba Ibaku said the protests are of no consequence to the action of the assembly, as he urged Governor Al-Makura to prepare his answers against the charges, than “continue to sponsor protests against a constitutional process.”

Daily Trust observed that armed policemen were stationed at strategic locations, as they followed up on patrol to prevent the protest from turning violent. They made arrest of two youths suspected to be hoodlums, who tried to capitalize on the protest to cause trouble.

State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Ismaila Umaru, confirmed the protest, as well as the arrest of the two suspected hoodlums. He said the police will charge them to court, after investigation.
