Is 'kanye' An Igbo Name? by ezeagu(m): 3:10am On Oct 11, 2008 |
I was just wondering if Kanye is an Igbo name seeing as people have been saying it's swahilli for 'only one', while others say it translates to "go take a sh*t". So could it be a long lost name in the Americas that was passed down by enslaved Igbo people because there are many versions of this name in Igboland including Kanyechukwuekele (let's give God praise) and Kainene etc. (or just Kanye) post your thoughts plz. |

This same kind of speculation happened for Ne-Yo. His middle name is written Chimere. Some people speculated it to have Igbo origins. It's even more confusing when Chimere is an oriental word. . . Japanese or Chinese, I believe. . . and Ne-Yo is part Chinese. I think, to get rid of all of this speculation, people should compile a list of suspected individuals with names of Igbo origin and then go ask those individuals about the origin of their names. Kanye though, is an Igbo name. It may not be what Kanye had in mind when he decided to take on that name, though. It is a possibilty though that Kanye can be one of those names that survived through slavery. One other name that I'm suspecting is Obie Trice's name Obie. It's pronounced the exact same way as Obi, and thus far, I've only seen African Americans bear the name, but oh well. |

http://www.yeahbaby.com/meaning-name-etymology.php?name=Kanye Kanye is not an igbo name at all. From the web page, it claimed kanye means honour but the complete igbo version is kanyeolisa-ekene which means give God thanks unless you want to call it Give God honour. |

tpia: I think the problem here is that people don't understand how much of an influence Igbo people had in American culture. I am not trying to claim anybody, I ASKED A Question. If you didn't see the link I posted above it clearly states that Kanye is an African name I don't know about Hawaii or Botswana, can you post the link to the pages you found on your search? |

tpia: lol, it's funny what some people would claim, obviously that's rubbish. tpia: I think they acknowledge it's a Ghanian name, I think it was a way to connect back to Africa. tpia: That's why I ask if the name is gotten from Igbo. Oh well guess the only way to know would to be ask Kanye West himself as someone suggested earlier. |

I think the name Kanyechukwu is shortened from Ka anyi nye ya chukwu, or maybe it's a different igbo dialect. |
