children between the ages of 4 and 9 at
an African orphanage while on a
mission trip.

Matthew Durham, 19, confessed to his
crimes, which he committed at a Kenyan
children’s home while volunteering with
the organization Upendo Kids
International. Upendo is a missionary
organization that sponsors children’s
care, education and health programs in
Kenya. Durham has travelled to Kenya
with the organization several times.

On his last visit, Durham requested to
stay in the children’s home rather than
at an offsite facility, according to the
criminal complaint. While there, he
“often touched them in a sexual manner
or told them to touch themselves while
he watched.”
“A caretaker at the orphanage noticed
something wasn’t right and confronted
Mr. Durham. He admitted to some of the
acts,” United States Attorney Sanford
Coats said.

Although Durham committed the crimes
overseas, he can still be held accountable
in the United States. He is being held
without bond and could face life in
prison''.
