Onitsha — Teachers posted to rural areas, who have been promised extra 20 per cent of their basic salary as incentive for accepting their posting and working in those areas, will begin to earn their pay from next month.

Also, teachers who teach core subjects in secondary schools namely English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Igbo and the like will earn extra N3, 000 monthly as promised by the state government, will start getting theirs from next month.

The Commissioner for Education, Kate Omenugha, revealed these in an interview in Awka on Thursday.

Besides these, Omenugha said her ministry is collating the data of schools in the state to know what their challenges are and how to tackle them.

According to her, the immediate challenge is walling of girls' schools, after which the state will extend similar gesture to co-educational schools which run boarding system.

According to her, accreditation of 11 technical schools in the state is uppermost apart from the implementation of the planned one-teacher-one-laptop policy by 2015 and one-student-one-palmtop by 2018.

Already, she said, Microsoft Corporation has trained 50 teachers who will help to train the rest of teachers that are not computer literate in the state school system.

Also, to ensure that educational institutions conform to due process, visitation panels have been set up for the state College of Education, Nsugbe and the State University.

According to Omenugha, the state still needs about 3, 000 teachers to service the over 256 secondary schools in the state and 2, 000 teachers in the primary school sector. She said recruitment is part of the plan of the state government in the next 100 days.

She also announced that Anambra State will host the next Mass Literacy Day billed for September 9 to demonstrate its posture in giving education a boost.

According to her, last month, the government trained about 220 more facilitators for the about 1, 500 adult literacy centres in the state.
