It is not uncommon to have people coming to someone's house unannounced. Some persons don't have any problem with it but there are others who feel that the visitor should pre-inform them before coming.

I would prefer a prior notice before one visits. This is because the person may not meet me at home or I may not be in a position to entertain visitors at that time. A prior notice will enable me receive you better. Personally before I go visiting someone, even my friends, I first of all call them to know whether or not they are at home and not busy. I think this is common courtesy.

What is your view on this?

In my culture (Somali) with the older generation its almost unheard of to call or "book an appointment" (as they see it) when going to visit someone so their visits are always unannounced unless they are travelling long distances and so for their own benefit they will call and make sure your home at least to avoid a wasted trip lol. However with the younger generations or especially people in the diaspora that is most definitely dying out and so you are most likely to be made aware when your going to be visited. However unannounced visitors means you always be ready and prepared for people to drop by at any time which can be a nightmare ie Your house should always be clean and you should always have extra food. You are not allowed an off day or expect to look bad. lol Culture!

Prior notice before visiting saves the two parties some stress I reckon.

However, you will agree with me that there are some surprise visits that bring pleasure and satisfaction instead of stress.

Incognito visits.

Just last week an acquaintance whom I have not heard from for over 4 years, first sent me a request on FB, which I accepted, next thing he sent me messages asking if I can help he secure a job as he is currently out of job; I told him I'll try my best and let him know if there's any suitable opening.

Then just by weekend, he sent me a message saying he is on the way to my place and he'll like to spend the night at my house shocked
He was 3hrs away from me when he sent the message, I ignored the message and did not host him. I wonder how someone will embark on an 11hours journey without informing the host.

To him now, I must be a very bad person; if that's being bad, I don't want to be good.

It depends on who's visiting.
Re: Having Visitors Without Prior Notice: Your View by SAMBARRY: 6:56am On Aug 06, 2014
Well back in the days people especially family friends or extended family members show up without calling to inform you that they will be coming and that was because there was no phone and its kind of a culture thing . imagine your mom or your moms sister coming to visit you and then you ask her in a playful manner e.g "aunty mi why didn't you call before coming" the next answer is very much predictable. You will hear

must I call my aburo before I come. Afterall your house is my house and vice versae

and if you were someone who lived in uncles, aunties or cousins house be ready to put up with unexpected visits because some of them will think it's their right and you dare not open the door or say why didn't you call. If your family is a close knit one everyone will know how ungrateful and rude you are for not opening the door for your family member meanwhile you lived with them when you were in school.

African mother in laws too are guilty of that
