Fire Service Men Attacked In Ibadan •as Conductor Dies In Fire Accident by omolomolarinero: 7:55am On Aug 05, 2014
Men of the Oyo State Fire Service, at the Challenge station on Monday, were attacked while they were trying to put out fire which razed a commercial commuter around Sakapena, Idi-Arere, Ibadan. Eyewitness informed reporters that the commercial Liteace Toyota bus with registration number XA 401 LRG, coming from Oja’ba end to Molete, skidded off his way while trying to manouvre its way for a pedestrian, who carelessly crossed the road. It was gathered that the bus tumbled with the driver’s side on the ground. While sympathisers were trying to rescue the commuters, the fuel tank cover flung and sparked off the inferno. All the passengers were rescued except the conductor identified as Tayo, who died in the accident. When men of the fire service arrived at the scene, they were attacked by the so-called sympathisers, for allegedly arriving late at the scene and for not having enough water. Some of the officers who pleaded anonymity, informed journalists that they were stoned while several dirty substances including packaged feaces placed on the road median, were also flung at them. One of the officers, identified as Emiola Sulaimon Okikiola was injured during the incident.

The fire officers denied ever arriving at the scene of the accident with inadequate water, adding that fire service team should under no circumstance, go to an inferno scene without enough water. One of them said: “we received the call around 8.25am from our headquarters and within three minutes, six of our officers arrived the scene with a 15,000 litres truck. But to our greatest, people at the scene attacked us, claiming that we came late.”
