The progenitor of the Debate sessions in the Education section of Nairaland Fynestboi, who is also the moderator of the Section, under the guidance of Nairaland notable and prominent personell (Jarus(, Tgirl4real, Obinoscopy) began actively planning a platform where students (undergraduates) from different tertiary (Polythecnic, University, College of Education, Technology schools) can meet and challenge their intellectual prowess under the umbrella of their citadel.
Much to the midas touch of the owner of Nairaland Seun Osewa and the unrelenting effort of all coordinators, the planning of the debate kicked off in earnest on October 31st 2013 and lasted through November, However topics were suggested by debaters and the topics cut accross all sections on here, (family, technology, politics, etc).
At the end of the screening excercise which was based on provision of two or more representatives from each citadel, based on this screening method only 20, citadel made it through to the first round of the debate matches.

[i][b] Nairaland Interschool debate was the first edition of the debate on Nairaland and on any online forum which was organized by one of the moderators in the educational section of the nairaland forum with aim of forming a bond that exists beyond the e-world in order to improve and impact the society positively.

This debate is coming at the appropriate time when we continue to have a decline in the reading and writing habit of our youth, this we believe his our little way of re orientating society about the Important and benefits of positive criticism through debating, and that we have been able to achieved in the just concluded NAIRALAND INTERSCHOOL DEBATE (5TH APRIL 2014)(Fynestboi [i][b]

About 32 schools showed their interest to participate in the online debate but was reduced to 20 schools because some of them were unable to meet up with the requirement which was to present two or more representatives. The 20 schools were:-(FUTA'UNIJOS'UNIBADAN'DELSU'KSU'LASU'NDU'UNIBEN'OSUSTeCH'UNN'UNILAG'ABU ZAIRA,uNIOSUN.IMSU,FUTMINNA,OAU,FUNAAB,LAUTeCH,NAIRALAND UNI

NOTE:-Nairaland university was created and added to part of schools participating in the debate so as to make the schools complete enough to make them face each other in the first round without leaving any school unchallenged.

The online debate was divided into six stages(qualifying, elimination, quarter final,semi-final third place and final stages). In addition to that, the topic which were used in each debate was suggested by the audience and co-ordinators which was subjected to further screening by the co-ordinators to pick the best topic for each debate out of the lot.

The winning school in each debate matches were determined with use of scoring/judging criteria which were appointed by the judges. So,the team with higest score qualifies for the next round.the criteria used is listed as follows:-
JUDGING CRITERIA (5 marks each)

understanding of the subject

The stages of the debate are as follows:-

Nonetheless, out of the 20 schools that participated the first 16 schools were selected to qualify for the next round after arranging them with the points they earned from the qualifying matches

ELIMINATION STAGE:-
Ąs the number of schools reduces to 16 and the rules for qualification is losers out it makes this stage really tight. The highlight of this stage was when UNIBEN was pitted against OAU in which UNIBEN came out as the winner. Fortunately for OAU,them losing to UNIBEN does not mean the race is over just yet for them as they qualify for the next round as best loser.

So the other matches in this round include :-

Debate Matches include:-

Ndu VS UNIBEN
Does Nigeria truly needs a female
president?

Unilag VS DELSU
Topic: Capitalism is better than socialism

5MONTHS+, WHO IS TO BLAME? FG/
ASUU?

Qualifiers :-UNIBEN,LASU,OAU,DELSU

SEMI-FINAL STAGE:-
This stage stands as a bridge to the final stage,as the team fought their way through to the final with luck as in the case of LASU,and completely trampling on their opponent to make it through to the glorious final round as evident in the match between DELSU vS UNIBEN.

With delsu as the winner. The result sets up an exciting third place match between UNIBEN VS OAU

Semi-final matches are :-

UNIBEN VS DELSU
"NIGERIA NEEDS TO DIVIDE FOR TRUE
DEVOLOPMENT TO TAKE PLACE".

LASU VS OAU
THE OIL SECTOR HAS A BETTER
PROSPECT IN ADVANCING NIGERIA'S
ECONOMIC GROWTH AND
DEVELOPMENTAL EFFORTS THAN THE
AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

THird Place
UNIBEN VS OAU
TOPIC: Sex Education should be Included in
our Secondary School Curriculum

Here we are at the third place of this interesting debate, the match which decides who get to go home with the bronze medal. This stage pitted UNIBEN VS OAU who have met before in the eliminating stage of this tournament which saw UNIBEN victorious in a thrilling and wonderful battle of words and wits. This stage can be considered as a second leg of this encounter seeing as they have met before, only that the victor lifts the bronze medal. For team UNIBEN,they have remained unbeaten since the beginning of this tournament until they met team DELSU branded as one of the best team in this competition so far who flushed down the title hope of UNIBEN down the drain and earn themselves deserved tickets into the final round.

And for team OAU,also one of the best team in this debate were giving an opportunity to continue the chase for the debate champion by qualifying for the next round as best loser after they defeated in the elimination round by this same UNIBEN.But before that their debaters have conquered lots of battle which made them a strong contender for the debate champion until they met LASU who bashed their hope of winning the debate in a controversial semi final match of the debate.

And it goes without saying that both teams have been represented by host of great writers that have showed class,discipline,co-ordination and teamwork to go along with their impeccable style of. Arguing and their compendious description and illustration of the subject matter, With the representatives of each teams armed with these qualities sets another interesting showdown in place between the two titans, and as expected it was an interesting battle in which team OAU became the winner of the match and clinch the bronze medal for themselves.

However, with both teams facing each other in the finals after battling the best teams ,the final match is sure to be a tough feat with TEAM DELSU having the upper hand to win. And as expected,it was a tough one but the result turns out to be an unexpected one as TEAM LASU emerge winners of the competition. the determination, zeal and discipline contributed to their success.

And it also goes without mentioning the commendable effort mustered by the representatives of TEAM DELSU both in the final match and throughout the competition but unfortunately, they were unable to defeat TEAM LASU which is a surprise to the audience.

BEST DEBATERS
At the end of it all,three representatives was picked as the top three debaters which was determined by adding up their individual scores garnered in the debate matches.the debaters include;
1 The Last Nazgul (UNIBEN)
2. Epaul (DELSU)
3. Iamdejman (LASU)..
Congratulations to them

Myhke: ABU ZARIA DEBATER

Life, some say, is full of experience most of which aims at moulding
us. Some approach us,trying to correct us and few ends up making a better
personality of us.
NISD will always assume one of the peak positions of the few experiences
that have succeeded at leaving their footprint, in the path of my
temperament, academically and psychologically wise.

In one sentence,"I learnt alot" but at d same time, this is an
understatement. Every time i try documenting what i learnt,I find myself
being lost in d vast mass of what i garnered.
Ladies, gentleguys and hermaphrodites (if there is any),I am Mhyke nd here
I am trying nd striving to create for you,an effigy of what I learnt from
the latest NISD.
I mentioned dat I am striving bcoz i'm armed with an army of just 500 words
and I said i'm striving because even if i had an arsenal of a million
words, conveying to you,the full knowledge will always an impossible quest.
Exploring the tower of what i learnt from its foundation, I cant but
refer to every debater that participated in d debate and I'm proud to say
that the majority of what I learnt had their sources from
them,specifically,their essays.
The essays opened to me, a new realm of debate.Iv bn constantly awed at
the points/facts contained in the essays, the way they were expatiated, the
enticing pattern through which they are convincingly conveyed to the
audience.I have at few times found myself in situations where my brain was
saturated with thoughts nd opinions, but findin a suitable way of
articulating them while retaining the emotion somx pose as an obstacle,so i
ended up giving an ersatz copy of wat i had in mind. But since d debate came
to an end,I have, from my vantage point, improved in writing my
thoughts.Infact,this essay is a witness.
Also, there were few topics which I had tagged "hardly debatable" but by
the time i finished reading the essays about them,I found myself trying to
figure out,how the debaters were able to provide ample information about
them in the essays.I gained lessons from the way some debaters, through the
use of idioms/grammatical expression, elucidate their points, leaving their
opponents with rhetorical questions.Their meticulous selection of examples
used in their essays also left my knowledge with more than a thing or two.
Futhermore, most essays contained points that are already obvious to the
audience but I have learnt from some debaters,in few instances, the
advantage of travelling deep into the idea of the topic and bringing out
facts(most of which are difficult to oppose) that the audience werent aware
of,to their realisation.Few debaters have implicitly taught me that the
best way to kill your opponent is with his sword. They exhibited an amazing
skill at turning your points at you;a skill I am trying to adapt.
By d time d debate ended I found myself challengin mhyke to view topics
from a point of view slightly different from the expected.

In continuation, as much as I'd like no to mention this,I learnt few things
from some of the abitrators of the debate.

Some judges,at few times,made me
realise through their judgement, that the larger part of the strength, in
one's essay does not reside in the excess or validity of your points but is
constrained in how far one can go to make them immune to/forebear
opposition while retaining their conviction.

There were few times I personally judged the debaters and would find my
judgement different from the judges. But by the time very few of them found
it partinent to post the reasons behind their judgement, I can't but
appreciate their skills and sense of judgement.

In addition, with admiration of those who selected the topics, I'd like to
share how the topics of d debate have contributed to my knowledge.
I
observed the topics to be those that were speculated on some important
fields of education nd the Nigerian Metropolis which I have ignored or
never been curious about. There were the educative kinds that actuated my
will to be in constant relationship, to maintain an unfailing familiarity
with some aspects of the world around you(socially, economically and
academically) and some knowledge surrounding it's existence.

Conclusively, the largest committee of the community that made up the
debate has also contributed, slightly immensely to my understanding. My
knowledge was broadened by some questions, few viewers asked the
debaters. Some of them have the intrinsic ability of building up
imponderable questions from the debaters essay. I even found myself taking
some of them for judges.
Just before i relieve my keyboard, I hope I have succeeded at giving you
a comprehensive idea of what I learnt from the most recent NISD

Thank you.

Smithsammy: LASU DEBATER.

It was during last year’s unceasing strike, when the goings was tough in the tertiary institutions of the nation. ASSU was registering its grievance at one side; ASUP was also voicing its complaints at other side. COESU was considering following suit. All centered towards changing the status-quo of the nation’s educational system. And as a result, we (the students) were left idle. While some students were busy engaging themselves in social vices and other bad acts, the gifted and intellectual gentleman – Finestboi, and some other intelligent minds were brainstorming on how best the incessant strike could be used to student’s advantage. And to this end, the idea of the ‘NAIRALAND INTER-SCHOOL DEBATE (NISD)’ was birthed. The maiden edition of the competition had come and gone, and as one of the participants, I crave to share with you all, what I have learned and how it has shaped me for the future ahead.

First on my list is,
IMPROVEMENT IN MY WRITING SKILL: my participation in the NISD has opened me to profound and astute way of writing. And also, reading from different geniuses paraded the first edition of the NISD has made me a versatile writer. I.e. I can opt to be very complex in my writing; this I learned from The Last Nazgul, or choose to be very detailed in my inscription; this I learned from Epaul. Better still, I can opt to be very entertaining in my writing; this I learned from Oluwatola, the profound female of the maiden edition of the NISD. I learned different skills from each and every one of the participants and this has helped me, a great deal, in refining my writing prowess. I sure believe that, this will, in no doubt, take me a long way in the academic circles.

Secondly, INCREASE IN MY WORD BANK: I tell you, I learned a vast deal of new and up-to-the-minute words and terminologies during the NISD. We are in the 21st century and anyone who fails to equip him/her self with new terms may be susceptible to un-comprehension in the contemporary world. The new terms learned would place me in a better position to grasp complex and sophisticated materials, and also, will help me in intellectual discourses.

Thirdly, INCREASE IN MY COLLECTION OF INFORMATION: the platoon of topics debated on had given me a wider and in-depth understanding of many facts and records, and has increased my treasure of information. No doubt, the NISD has made me a well updated and well detailed person, and I believe this will, in diverse ways, help me in my academics, and also, will help me make salient contributions in erudite dialogues
Last but not the slightest is,
IMPROVEMENT IN MY ANALYTICAL SKILL: partaking in the NISD has helped me to broaden and sharpen my thinking-faculty, and has made me a good analyst. Now, I can easily examine set of data and make salient explanations and conclusions on them. As a Management student and a soon-to-be administrator, I believe this will take me a long way in my field and will help me become a good administrator. Bottom line: a good “analytical skill” is a requisite of all managers and managers-to-be, and I’m very happy the NISD helped me to achieve it!
I thank all those that made the first NISD a success! And also, to the students that represented their Alma-Mata, I say well done! However, it saddens my heart that neither polytechnics nor colleges-of –education were represented in the first edition and we have legion of their students on this forum. I would like to see a good turn-out from you guys in the 2nd edition and the subsequent ones. Thanks. Smith Sammy, second representative, Lagos State University.

AUDIENCE: One among others 2013/2014 NISD Audience Papidinho.

Sequel to the inter- school debate that ended earlier this year. I write to assess the competition from the audience's perspective.

First off, I would like to commend the brain behind this competition as it has given many nairalanders (guests inclusive) the exposure and education it oozes. A lecturer of mine once said, 'education is the window to the future of the nation' and the competition has given me the clarity of doubt in the fact that Nigeria has a good future ahead.

Also, I would like to highlight some positive strides of the competition and thereafter point out some weakness I feel could help burgeon the potentials of the competition.

Talking about the positive ends of the competition. I would cite the wide exposure it warrants participants and readers (audience), the improved chance of honing one's writing skills and having a good view of evey context from at least two ends.
For every ying there is a yang. The maladies of the competition were clear as shown by organisers, ranging from announcement of results to miscalculation of scores and I think we can do better in that aspect. Also, the scheduling should be outlined from the onset to avoid friction of plans.

And prior notice should be given to judges from the onset of the competition and proper measures should be taken to remind them.

All in all, it was a good experience for all stakeholders involved and I hope to be among the audience once again if not among the participants when the next edition starts.

AUDIENCE: Francistony.

Ermm, I was privileged to be among the few audience who witnessed an extraordinary fierce war of vocabularly during the last year maiden edition of Nairaland interschool debate which Lagos state University
through the magnificent exchange of vocabularly by IamDejaman and Smithsammy won it comfortably and I'll proudly say it was a huge success. The positive outcome of the event surpassed the negative side which is meant to be overlooked since it's on it's birth. I envy the charisma of words paraded by ThelastNazgul of University of Benin and Epaul of Delta State University Abraka. Oluwatola5 and Miracy of Obafemi Awowolo University stood out as ladies of substance with their magnifying use of english. The tenancity of Aysuccess99 of University of Ibadan was quite catchy and I must commend him for it. I was meant to represent a school, but I withdrew for a reason best known to me.
Though the maiden event which was birthed and conducted by our amiable
educational section moderator 'fynestboi' whom I feel is one of a few Moderator on this forum that does his job well witnessed some loopholes. In the course of the event, some school did not report at a
stipulated time of posting their point and making a rebuttal, subjecting to the postponement of their D-day because there was a shortage of debaters which shouldn't be so in this second edition if
more debaters from our Nigerian tertiary institution would agree to turn up.

Some schools presented only a debater in some cases because their co-debaters couldn't make it even after the debate had been shifted and that was bad to the extent, for it becoming one man against two. It was witnessed when Unibadan faced NDU. They had only one man to challenge NDU which they later lost.
I can't wait for the commencement of this edition which seems to being spicy, promising, piquant and will do lot of glamour by the learned judges and my colleague across our Universities, Polytechnic and College of Education.
I am your only gentleman Francistony. smiley

Damosky UNILAG Debater

I have never liked writing from childhood but had a lot of information about happenings around me...decided to enter the competition when I saw no student of my great citadel of learning(Unilag) was ready to participate...took up the courage to invite people from the admission thread 2013/2014 I.e Kingsolo nd ugonna volunteered to participate but I knew they where going to later back out.snoopy was on groud then so I just decided to team up with him and we established contact.met snoopy first at a food joint and from there we got talking...snoopy and I gave each other a deadline before any debate to forward our eassy for the other person to read through.we made corrections...I had to borrow money in some cases before the debate while still waiting for my allowance to get enough Mega byte to avoid stories that touch during the debate...did overnight because of some debates, cancelled some classes, slapped a friend because he decided to frustrate me and I was never in the mood, asked people for inputs...I never prepared for the last debate that we lost...I had some emotional issues so I just listed out my points for snoopy he developed them and sent them back to me...did some adjustment...on the day of the final debate myself and snoopy almost shed tears...we had a poor build up...there was no electricity in school, had a very bad network, we where both hungry...I knew we where not going to make it to the next round but I just pretended that all was going to be well....my heart skipped when the cooridinators never posted the result that same day...I knew we had lost...met snoopy that night with his babe and they where giving me false hope.I had given up already...I knew it was over.checked the result the next day during church service and I just cried that we lost due to my poor build up.the debate got me closer to a lot of people on nairaland and outside. Posted some of my essays on a notice board in my faculty, wrote some articles for some of my mates...looking forward to participating in the next edition with a very high level of optimisim that I would come out tops from my last experience...thanks to all who helped in bring out a talent I never discovered.

IAMDEJMAN: LASU DEBATER

Words could not describe my level of happiness on the 5th of August, 2014. It was a day I was so happy to the extent I couldnt believe what we(Lasu debaters) has done. We just won the 1st edition of Nairaland inter school debate. It was unbelievable because after we lost our first debate, no one would have thought that we could still win. I m going to tell you what I learnt in this essay.
I learnt that two heads really make faster and better progress than one. Truly, one could be brilliant but one cant know it all and it was evident. Once again, I thank my ever solid partner, Smithsammy, for his unrelenting help throughout the debate. He is the brother I have never met.
I also learnt that we must keep improving everyday and that no one is above mistake. Through the judges, I also learnt better use of English and applications of words.
Above all, I learnt that through God, nothing is impossible. Dont write yourself off. Keep hoping and one day, it would be evident that you had hope. Everything is possible.
IamDejman,
Lagos state University.

DAVOS93: OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY OAU. Debater

Hello viewers!

This is Davo93, one of the contestants in the last Nairaland Inter-School Debate. I was privileged to represent Obafemi Awolowo University along side my able pen pushers.

NISD never left without leaving an indelible mark in my life! I can say with utmost confidence that ever since I participated in the previous edition of the NISD, my writing proficiency has taken a new dimension. Accuracy at writing, rightful articulations of words and proper use of tenses, all of these are notable improvements I have seen since then.

A big thanks to the Judges for their unsentimental appraisal of my write-ups which did not only expose my weakness in writing but also provoked me to better writing. Their words of encouragement sparked the thought of hope in exhibition of what I never knew I could express so greatly.

I will not forget in a hurry how I was taught how to appropriately reference an essay by one of the Judges then...lol. Before that time, it may interest you to know I never knew that.

In all, the improvement in my writing cannot be talked about without the effect of the NISD been referenced. This improvement has brought glory to me in numerous ways. A major one was the Undergraduate Essay Competition organised by the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), Ile-Ife Chapter where I finished the first runner up. This among many others have been the fruits of the knowledge impacted by the 2013 NISD.

I want to say a big thank you once again to the Organizers, Judges and Sponsors of the 2013 NISD for the opportunity of building that which I had in me! I also want to encourage my friends out there that Social Media platforms like Nairaland should not be a bane to your knowledge expansion, rather a tool to building your intellectual capacity. Looking forward to this year's edition earnestly. Much gracias!

Cowleg representing Imsu at the last concluded NISD.

My experience as a participant at the last concluded NISD. Firstly, I would like to appreciate the initiator of this laudable and successful project 'Mr Fynestboi' he was simply amazing, brilliant and deserve commendation from the entire nairaland community. Fynestboi concept of an online debate was simply fascinating and a massive success.
During the last imbroglio between ASUU members and the federal government that resulted in heavy presence of bored and jobless Nigerian students on nairaland, many of them including I 'yours truly' were mainly online trolls on this cyberspace. When I saw a thread for NISD planning thread, I became interested and also an active contributor.
Fortunately, my school was selected among the participating schools. I launched an online campaign in our schoool thread for a colleague to join me but I met a constraint all of them turned down my proposal. At the tail end, one of my colleague decided to join me.
I was burning with enthusiam to participate and air my views regardless I'm no fan of essay writing. It took me a week to prepare my writeup smiley Nisd thought me a whole lot of things like essay writing, use of words, debating skills, how to outwit your opponents ( healthy competition), how to express your views and convince the readers.
Unfortunately, my co-debater did not show up and we were eliminated at the qualification round. Before I conclude this write up, I will like to add that I was an 'insignifico' on nairaland, forgive my choice of word. I admire lots of nairalanders like mazi~omeneko, alutacontinua, sincere9erian, coolval22 and others I cannot mention because of limited space, I admire them mostly because of their writting skills which i'm sure made them celebrities on nairaland.
Eventhough i'm yet a professional writter, I have decided to continue and strive so as to develop as well master the art of writting. I will also use this medium to make a proposal for season 2 of NISD.

I am a witness to your writting improvement grin.

I followed you and other debaters like e.paul snoop.y through out the time OAU stayed on that debate. I think it is evident that you have greatly improve with word usage, i like those parts you played with words. cheesy cheesy.

Don't be curious, if no one is noticing healthy 'cerebra' like yours people like me are noticing.

Thank you so much Electronzeez. I wanted to be part of this year's edition but my schedules did not allow me. I have been reading the essays posted and they are really good.
