Am in tears. Couldn't hold it when i read what he said about his wish to bring Nigeria to the world map and where he rebuked his club over reselling his services to his country emphasizing that he is a lawyer May God rest your soul Sam Okwaraji. One day a good government with a human face will accord you your deserved honour for your heroism. He could have lived if he had listened to his Club as against playing the qualifiers. I remember that song partly that was sung along the streets as we lined up looking into the sky as the helicopter with the green white green flag passed with his corpse "eh saaaam okwaraji uueh (2X) sam okwaraji biara uwa bia ite egwu....." I ve forgotten the other parts |

May Sam Okwaraji's soul rest in peace. He could not have died unsung. A standard sports stadium was built and named Sam Okwaraji Stadium in Orlu, his home town, the second most populated city in Imo state. see http://vastsportsfacilities.com/olu_township/olu_township.html The stadium was commissioned by OBJ in May 2007. It hosted international soccer competitions. But barely four months after the present governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha came to office, he set up a kangaroo committee to inquire how the stadium was built. After the inquiry, the stadium was partially demolished; and today the stadium lay in ruins as shown below - no replacement. A good rest wish for late Sam Okwaraji by Nigerians is to have Gov. Okorocha restore the Sam Okwaraji stadium the condition he met it in 2011 - since he has not been able to build a new one. (Modify) (Quote) (Report)

I watched that match live at national stadium simply because of okwaraji. So many spectators died that day due to stampede. I could not eat for two days when I heard that Sam had died. I saw Sam slumped and told my brother, sitting beside me that : see Sam is not moving again. The ambulance later came and took him away. RIP Sam. |

I usually watch matches on TV. NTA was good in those days, bringing Nigerians live broadcast of crucial matches. Nigeria vs Angola match of August 12, 1989 was indeed crucial. However most soccer fans in Lagos preferred to watch that match live at national stadium simply because Okwaraji was to play. He had won the hearts of football fans in his maroc 88 and Seoul 88 exploits. Everybody wanted to see Sam in live play. This could be the probable reason the national stadium 65000 capacity was filled to over 100000 that day. Sam was a rare legeng and patriot. May his soul rest in peace. |

I cannot forget that match. Nigerians had grown to love Sam, his discipline, skills, compassionate patriotism, his Rastaman dreadlocks, great movement and shots on the field of play. Everything about Sam was remarkable, great background, love for family and nation, a modern gentleman with good education. A qualified lawyer. His demise really was a loss to many of us youngsters and others alike in those days. That was back when I was just about sitting for my WASC exams back in the day. May God comfort his mother, the family and loved ones he left behind. Nigeria(/ns) and the government should please do the needful for his family and in his honour. |
