It's not unusual for one to come across some Nigerian writers (mostly army officers) that were prominent in the 1960's making reference to a manuscript written by one of the coup plotters of January 15, 1966, Maj. Emmanuel Ifeajuna. The manuscript is believed to have been written after the coup. While his fellow coupists, Capt. Ben Gbulie and Maj. Adewale Ademoyega have published theirs into "Nigeria's Five Majors" and "Why We Struck" respectively, that of Ifeajuna remains unpublished till date, but with vital facts in it being used by those who have access to it.

According to Chinua Achebe in "There Was a Country" (pp. 178 - 179), Ifeajuna approached him and Chris Okigbo to publish the manuscript in their Citadel Press, but refused because the 'account showcased a writer trying to pass himself off as something that he wasn't." According to Okigbo, Nzeogwu said, "I hear you and Achebe are planning to publish Emma's (Ifeajuna) lies." While Achebe, Okigbo and Nzeogwu were entitled to their opinion of doubt, the likes of Awolowo, Obasanjo and Ofeimun found certain things in the said manuscript important. Obasanjo made reference to it in his book, "Nzeogwu."

According to Odia Ofeimun who claims he got a copy of it from Obafemi Awolowo (whom himself got it when he was a federal minister) whom he worked for as a personal secretary, when he countered Achebe over his last book, in an essay, "The Forgotten Documents of the Nigerian Civil War", the manuscript contains vital information.

you are looking for it because few prominent igbos at that time regarded it as a manuscript of lies and therefore there must be some objectivity and truth in it to you Yorubas.

This request of yours is interesting...picks up a cushion seat and grabs popcorn waiting for scholars to engage intellectually on this thread.

OrlandoOwoh, perhaps you may do well by giving us some background in these characters. Specifically, who is Ifeajuna? What was his role in the coup? What are your preliminary hunches regarding these unpublished notes?

Waiting.....

I believe it contains some secrets. Prof. J. P. Clark was the first person to get hold of it. He sent it to London for publication. For security reasons, the publishing company took it to General Babafemi Ogundipe, the High Commissioner to the UK. He forwarded it to the Head of State, Yakubu Gowon in Lagos. This is according to Odia Ofeimun.
