Isis/boko Haram: Handling Terrorism The Russian Way by Nobody: 11:41am On Aug 20, 2014
Although the Russian technique won't win any plaudits from Amnesty International, it's been known to produce rapid results.

As related here in a column two years ago, the Soviets were victims of a hostage-taking operation only once in Lebanon. But the way they handled it left a lasting impression on the Shiite gangsters.

Since some inaccurate versions of that episode have been popping up on talk radio in the wake of the Higgins kidnapping, the rest of this space is given over to a summary of what really happened, as first disclosed in the Jan. 6, 1986, Jerusalem Post by reporter Benny Morris.

In late September 1985, pro-Iranian Shiites put the snatch on four attaches

from the Russian Embassy in Beirut and warned that the hostages would be executed, one by one, unless the Soviets persuaded pro-Syrian militiamen to stop shelling Hezbollah strongholds in the Lebanese port city of Tripoli.

On that occasion, the "Oppressed of the Earth" were billing themselves as agents of the hitherto unknown "Islamic Liberation Organization," but the KBG had no doubts about who they really were.

Although the Soviets attempted to open channels for quiet negotiations, there was no let-up in the shellings. Only two days after the kidnappings, the body of one of the four hostages was found, shot through the head, on a Beirut trash dump.

So much for quiet negotiations. Having gotten the message, the Soviets decided to send one back.

KGB agents ran the name of a prominent Hezbollah leader through their computers and came up with the name and address of one of his closest blood relatives. They then kidnapped the kinsman, castrated him, and sent his severed organs to the Hezbollah honcho.

The package was accompanied by a terse cover note indicating that the KGB had the names of other close relatives and that Hezbollah could expect more such deliveries unless the three remaining hostages were freed forthwith.

It didn't take much time for Hezbollah to realize it was dealing with a different breed of "Great Satan." The three surviving hostages were dropped off only 150 yards from the Soviet Embassy from a late-model BMW that couldn't drive away fast enough.

Gorbachev didn't call a press conference to brag about what bad-asses his boys were, but Hezbollah obviously concluded that challenging the Russians could lead to more painful consequences than simply losing face.

It's worth noting that this was the last anyone ever heard of the "Islamic Liberation Organization."

By not-so-remarkable coincidence, it was also the last time Hezbollah ever messed with any Soviets in Lebanon.

“ We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who will harm us” these were the words of Winston Churchill. This is what the men in the armed forces have been doing for us everyday of their lives and most especially in recent years in Northern Nigeria. As we loose our civilian brothers and sisters we are also loosing them in the armed forces whether a commissioned officer or a soldier, we as a nation have forgotten to mourn and honor them. We like many people have friends and loved ones keeping to their oath of protecting this nation in that part of the country. So we have come up with a way for us as a nation to honor our fallen, through a website called www.nigerianfallenheroes.com please visit this website to see those that have laid their lives so you can honor them (this can be done by leaving a simple message, poems, quotes anything you are comfortable with on the memorial wall). If you know an officer or a soldier that has laid his life in northern Nigeria in recent times please send the following information to nigerianfallenheroes@gmail.com so we might upload it on to the website (1) a picture of the person preferably in uniform (2) name, rank and service number (3) where and when he died. Please pass this on to as many as you can. Let us honor our fallen heroes and let us tell their families we know and appreciate their sacrifices. Thank you. Signed: Patron

Here's another version of the story;

In October 1985, Alpha Group was dispatched to war-torn Beirut, Lebanon. The Kremlin was informed of the kidnapping of four Soviet diplomats by the militant group, the Islamic Liberation Organization (a radical offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood). It was believed that this was retaliation for the Soviet support of Syrian involvement in the Lebanese Civil War.However, by the time Alpha arrived, one of the hostages had already been killed. Through a network of supporting KGB operatives, members of the task-force identified each of the perpetrators involved in the crisis, and once identified, began to take the relatives of these militants as hostages. Following the standard Soviet policy of no negotiations with terrorists, some of the hostages taken by Alpha Group were dismembered, and their body parts sent to the militants. The warning was clear: more would follow unless the remaining hostages were released immediately. The show of force worked, and for a period of 20 years no Soviet or Russian officials were taken captive, until the 2006 abduction and murder of four Russian embassy staff in Iraq.

The only language these people understand is violence. Once they strike, you have to strike them 100 times harder - Terrorism cannot be minimized without we committing 'war crimes' or 'infringing terrorists' human rights' as Amnesty International will put it.

Good response from Russia, though

Such Soviet method is feasible with negligible backlash if and when the enemy is foreign. But our enemy is woven right in the very fabric of our society so any overwhelming or barbaric method used in combating the enemies will perpetually reverberate, leaving permanent scars and bad blood for generations. Think about how much debate for and against the use of starvation in the civil war that happened over 40 years ago, that alone is a guiding evidence that a nation/govt must not use questionable method in whipping her citizens in line. Boko haram will be defeated the day bad apples in Nigeria's military are routed.

Nigeria's war against Shekau's gang of terrorists is not similar to Colombia's war against Escobar in which Los pepes terror tactics were deployed against Escobar's relatives with covert support of the govt. Colombia's tactic worked because the entire nation was solidly behind their govt but such scenario is arguably not obtainable in Nigeria. Boko Haram's driving ideology enjoys substantial support in the north - Perhaps we can agree their mode of actualizing the ideology is what lacks support. Given the point the above, how feasible does anyone think we can adopt Soviet castration of BH relatives or Los Pepes reprisal terror method in combating Boko Haram?

I believe there are only two solutions to Boko Haram issue. One is to get rid of many moles in the military while the next is outright divorce of Nigeria's unholy union. I say let's try the two solutions above in descending order.

Shekau is not exactly Nigerian and most of his foot soldiers are miscreants from Niger, Chad etc. Boko haram draws its strength from the fact that they commit atrocities and walk like lords without any form of backlash.

Your solution of dividing the country is laughable, for bokoharam has clearly stated that they know no boundaries. In the event of a break up, and boko haram turns the north to a theatre of war, where do you think they'll have their sights afterwards? Do you think terrorist will just halt with their jihad?

Terrorist can be likened to virus, and as you know, a virus is fought with a virus, and so terror should be met with terror!!

Good one from the kremlins. I've always preferred the two eyes for an eye as long as the oppressor/terrorist remains unremorseful. It always works like magic. Let the sponsors of boko haram continue. We are watching and all is fair in war. I learnt that from nigerians.

The method worked well for Russia but I can never endorse such for my fellow Nigerians. ..how can castration of relatives of boko haram who may know nothing about the insurgency help solve the problem we have? ? It's inhumane. . A man shouldn't suffer for another man's sins...again, members of boko haram may not even care about whatever is being done to their relatives as they're senseless, may even be happy the relatives suffered/died while defending allah hence their rewards await them, also do you think boko haram members fear death?? This calls to mind the suicide bombers...

Some people here saying this should be implemented may end up being pointed either rightly or wrongly as a relative to a boko haram member...

There are ways boko haram can be tackled and this definitely not one....
Re: Isis/boko Haram: Handling Terrorism The Russian Way by delishpot: 11:19am On Aug 21, 2014
My own, force feed them pigs and alcohol when caught and make a video of it. Burry their corpse with pigs and pour pig blood on bulets before shooting them, that their 72 virgins will be a failed dream when they die with pig in their bodies. They will think twice before comming out to fight.

But for real sha, we need brain stormers to think of how to handle these people o.

the tactics is simple. " As long as its a designated terror group No Human right Law or War rules of Engagement should hold or be considered! "
