Among the activities of the Human Rights Unit of Citizens’ Rights and Mediation Centre (CRMC) is the prompt response to calls in police stations, otherwise known as “On the Spot Response”. This activity has no particular day or time in which it is carried out. The Centre is always ready to attend to this distressed calls each time received. Our field of operations covers all police stations in Enugu State. In this regard, the Human Right Unit has gone to Awgu, Udi, Nsukka etc. for bail of suspects, and our visit is always a success. The visit is always an impromptu one and CRMC staffs are ever ready to answer provided the arrest is within 48 hours. This is to give police time to make appropriate investigations. On each visit, the CRMC are always successful in bailing out the suspect provided it is bailable, not a capital offence. (i.e Armed robbery, murder, rape etc.)
In January 2011, a boy of 12 was detained at the Police Area Command for indecent assult. His mother ran to our Centre for help. With the aid of the staff of CRMC, the boy was released on bail without charges. Again, the police arrested a man in possession of an electronic kitchen appliance without receipt.
Upon the intervention of the staff CRMC, the seized property was released without charges. In February 2011, a female suspect who was held at the Police, State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for two weeks for the offence of fraud was charged to court immediately, at our instance. An 11-year old boy detained in the State C.L.D. for harassing a woman with a toy gun was released at our instance by the Commissioner of Police, because we strongly believed that the boy did not understand the implications of what he did. http://www.crmc-enugu.org/legal-aid-service/
