The so called terminal operators should wake up and smell the coffin. The ports are for imports AND exports and not just for imports. We also need to create JOBS for our people. Few days ago, I bought well milled, stone free, full bag (50 kg) Abakiliki rice for only N7,200 at Ogbete market. I couldn't believe it when someone told me about it initially until I gave him money to buy it just to confirm. Likewise, the Nigeria milled Ebony rice, Stallione rice and others are taking over the rice market in Enugu. Smuggling is definitely a problem because of our mostly ineffective custom officials but as local capacity grows, smuggling will become increasingly less profitable and gradually disappear just like is happening with rice. 51 Likes 1 Share |

Good one; only if they really encourage local production of rice. Btw we all know those goods in cotonu eventually find their way into Nigeria anyway so same tin. On a lighter note, is this d reason y d number of fishes in Titus sardine has reduced to almost one?? Hehe 10 Likes |

The problem we are facing is our leaking borders. We should try to tighten our borders and check what's entering the country. These importers are greedy and can go to any length to import these commodities into the country. These importers should invest in the production of these commodities rather than import. We should not be living ready-made life. We should produce these things ourselves. We have the waterbodies and the land. These men can be share holders in the company or even board of directors. The Abakaliki rice is stone free and very good when consumed. Its even cheaper than the imported rice. So what are we looking for outside when we can see it inside? Strict Laws should be placed on smuggled commodities. We should patronize Nigeria. That's the only way we can grow! 17 Likes |

Thanks for sharing this news story, your personal purchase of Abakaliki rice and encouraging us to smell the COFFEE. However 80% reduction is definitely an exaggeration and opens the otherwise LAUDABLE efforts of the Jonathan/Sambo administration in the agricultural sector to unnecessary RIDICULE by its detractors of whom they are not only many but they are a legion. 5 Likes |

Good for the economy but this is supposed to be a long term plan, cut it by 5% yearly until your local production levels up, then raise the cut to 15%. 1 Like |
