Are We All Really In This Together? by NgeneUkwenu(f): 9:55am On Sep 08, 2014
People miss it when they say Nigerians don’t care. Nigerians do care. But most of us care more about our personal ends than we care about our country. While a particular part of the country burns under a war against insurgents, it does appear some other parts are interested in one thing only: the return of President Goodluck Jonathan to power.

For some others, that interest is not even about the president himself but about the consequences of him losing power. You know how the ‘Chief Barber to the President’ knows he could cease to be same the very day the president loses power. So then, our ‘Chief Barber’ does not care about whether the president keeps his job, he cares only about keeping his own job and he understands the dynamics of power and the consequences of the big fish losing out.

To these ones, Chibok Girls is a tale for the moon-light, terrorist killings in the north are stories for dead gods. Forests may burn, oceans may run dry and the country can go to ruins, as long as they have power!

There is at least one part of the country where the abduction of Chibok girls is mostly seen as a charade. They see it as a game carried out to make the president look bad. Heck, the whole terrorism up north is seen as a war being fought to make Nigeria ungovernable for President Jonathan. It does not matter that this particular reign of terror predates his ascension to the presidency.

We want to believe ours is one united country but I doubt we can sell that lie to even the biggest of fools in our midst. How united is our country if despite the carnage up north, the southern part has been indulging in orgiastic rallies? At times, the rallies look like a direct ‘we-don’t-give-two-about-your-situation!’ middle finger signal to those northerners who everyday continue to face death and displacement from their homes.

Some are quick to say ‘they are killing themselves.’ But isn’t that too obvious a seeming fact that one has to take another look? Isn’t there a possibility these deaths, while being executed through the hands of fellow northerners and mercenaries, could be remotely orchestrated by powers that understand our country’s incessant obsession with seeing things through only two eyes: the eyes of ethnicity and that of religion.

These same ‘leaders’ that spend so much money promoting national unity go out of their ways to continue to divide us. We may pretend about our unity; what we cannot pretend about is the fact that divided, those in power will rule, united, the people will reign. The latter scenario is an idealistic expectation in today’s Nigeria.

Are we all in this together? Yes, if it is about the cosmetic show of national unity that never was. And of course No, if it is about relaying the reality we face today. That is of course not to say the big men and women at the top – Christians or Muslims, southerners or northerners – are all in this together, for their own personal interests. As for the small men and women, they bid their time.

But until then, most are glad to earn a token being used as just one of the appurtenances of power. The poor who want some of that power, like those who want a percentage of it because of the year they were born and not because of their abilities, want it because they love what those who have it today do with it. Turn by turn things until a blessed nation gets turned over. Poverty will always be a willing end to these cycles.

The simple answer to your thesis is capital NO

How do you expect unity and collaboration when some are praying for National Calamities, defeat and at same time ridicule our Military and Security Agents while referring them as GEJ's Militias?

Until we rally behind President Goodluck Jonathan, our Military and Security agencies, this war will be beyond us.

Where are those supporting Ishasay and foreign media wannabe celebrities assaults and insults on our Military?

We may need help as a country facing new emerging guerrilla warfare it wasn't equipped to confront and not numerous attacks by our own opposition parties and politicians.

after we rallied behind him in 2011, what did we get? Insurgency, him making tribal comments, groups springing up against our unity without any challenge from him, missing girls, missing money, corrupt officer walking free, law enforcement agencies rendered useless, etc. Nigerians are wise now. The SE can keep supporting him.

Rally behind him in this fight against Insurgency does not translate to rallying behind his political aspiration. I want him kicked out next year at the polls, but I want him to succeed in this fight against Insurgency. As a patriot, I have no other country to call my own as long as we remain together as one entity, If Jonathan fails to tackle insurgency, we all will bear the brunt directly or indirectly. It is not after one become a victim before he will realise that Insurgency favors no one-Not even the terrorist. By the way, The President still has a mandate till 2015, till then, he deserves our support in full with respect to governance including our constructive criticisms to make his government succeed.

The question is where was the precedent.
when a certain section of the country and adherents to a particular religion were bearing the brunt of this madness voices such as the OP wasn't heard.
So why demand that they be in this with you.
Herein lies the problem of Nigeria: where past injuries have not been addressed, don't expect past victims to weep for today's casualties especially where today's victims look on when injuries were meted to yesterday's casualties.
It didn't start today and it won't end today....just pray for the victims.
