Candidates Record High Performance In NECO SSCE by Nobody: 4:36pm On Sep 11, 2014
The National Examination Council (NECO) has recorded an
improved result in its 2014 June/July Senior Secondary School
Examination (SSCE), even as it blacklisted 16 schools and six
supervisors for examination malpractice.
The registrar of NECO, Prof. Promise Okpala, disclosed yesterday
at a news conference to release the 2014 SSCE result that 74.3
per cent of the candidates who sat for the June/July Senior
Secondary School Examination (SSCE) passed with five credits and
above as against 69.8 per cent in 2013.
Similarly, he stated that 52.2 per cent of the candidates scored
five credits including Mathematics and English Language as
against 48.7 per cent in 2013.
Okpala said that out of the 978,886 that sat for the examination,
727,389 had five credits and above, while 511,931 scored five
credits and above this year as against 500,306 in 2013.
He also disclosed that the level of malpractice in this year’s
examination has gone down, adding that the level of malpractice
this year is 0.44 per cent as against 0.80 per cent in 2013.
According to him, 4,343 cases of malpractice were recorded this
year while in 2013 8,307 cases were recorded, about a 50 per cent
reduction across the country.
The registrar disclosed that 16 secondary schools had been de-
recognized for three years while six supervisors were blacklisted
for being involved in examination malpractice.
The registrar stated that the level of pass has increased even
though Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council
(NERDC) has developed a new curriculum for senior secondary
schools and was approved by National Council of Education (NCE)
for implementation with 34 entrepreneurship subjects.
He said that the introduction of the subjects has expanded the
NECO syllabus from 40 to 76 subjects, thereby increasing the cost
of conducting examinations with increased personnel and days of
examination.
Okpala said that, notwithstanding, NECO has been able to release
the results within 62 days after the last paper.
