APC Vs PDP:Patriotism Or Territoriality? by Djicemob: 9:05am On Sep 12, 2014
As we look at the political parties, it is very difficult to project a growth based on any party’s ideological convictions. We are seeing more of a struggle for territoriality rather than a campaign fired by some sound patriotic zeal.

The ruling party seem too reluctant to evaluate how far their policies and or execution have impacted on the economy and the people. There is no reference to whatwe were told prior to elections in the past. There seems to exist a somewhat irritating biblical ‘house on the rock’ attitude by the PDP that make people have the impression that they are too big a party to be pulled down literarily.

On the other hand, the new APC seem to be reveling on the idea that the PDP seem to be a house divided against itself. The new party seems just too eager to accept all the prodigal members of the PDP as a spite rather than a growth process that attracts.

While the nation awaits the PDP’s self-evaluation, the APC is more preoccupied in telling the people how much the PDP has failed them but sadly not providing the needed basis for the trust of the people. The new APC that is a product of three parties prior to their amalgamation are in control of many states. Can the parties be proud to tell the people of a radical transformation of lives since they have been in power? Have we seen the reduction in poverty, the growth in infrastructure, the growth of the economy based on improved manufacturing, improved security in individual states and really, can the country boast of some redemptory powers by any section of the country controlled by any of the parties?

It is really presumptuous for any of the parties, new or old, big or small to boast of any messianic qualities without real and verifiable indices. Control of the center based merely on the condemnation of opposition or the reiteration of incumbency is neither here nor there. It should be clear to all parties in the struggle for the soul of Nigeria would not be won through jaded rhetoric and grandstanding of any sort.

The world has gone beyond all that in an ideas-driven twenty first century. The registration of the new party or even more parties is good for our democracy but when the chips are down, a thorough re-evaluation of the essence of political parties in a democracy is what would add value to ours.If democracy is for the people, then the drivers of all parties should put the country above personal, geographic, ethnic and religious sentiments.

These sentiments have stalled the development of this country and these are sentiments always being highlighted by those who at one point or the other been in leadership positions and as such in a position to have been the real change they seek in others.Trading words between each other about which party is superior to the other really begs the question. The people are now too politically sophisticated to have any party pull the wool over their eyes, mere political grandstanding is like a wink in the dark.

Political parties are not mere window dressing, the ideologically-driven ones are mere vehicles to push out the best brains and people of admirable character and industry to protect the national interest at all levels, parties are not meant to be solely for territorial acquisition. Let the parties work for the nation!
