An outpouring of rage has followed a jury’s conclusion that Mark Duggan was lawfully killed by police in Tottenham in 2011.

Jurors reached the decision by a majority of eight to two, concluding after three months of evidence that the 29-year-old did have a gun but it was not in his hand when he was shot.

There were angry shouts at the Royal Courts of Justice following the jurors' statement, with Duggan’s brother shouting “f*** them” and another supporter shouting “a black life ain’t worth nothing”.

Outbursts continued in the corridors of the court complex afterward, as supporters repeatedly shouted "murderers" and claimed police had got away with murder.

Some smashed a door and security staff were called to contain the situation.

Outside court, Carole Duggan repeatedly stated that her nephew had been “executed” before raising an arm in front of the assembled press pack and shouting “no justice, no peace”.

The father-of-six's brother Shaun Hall said: "We came for justice today, we don't feel we are leaving with justice."

He added: "We've got nothing to hide. We don't feel we have got anything to hide for."

The Metropolitan Police's assistant commissioner Mark Rowley attempted to give a statement outside court, but could barely be heard over the yelling of protesters.

Angry crowds jostled with waiting journalists, shouting "murderer" and chanting "Who killed Mark Duggan? The police killed Mark Duggan".

A transcript of the statement released later read: "Armed criminals have shot dead more than 50 people in London in the last three-and-a-half years.

"We send out well-trained, professional armed officers thousands of times a year to combat this threat, only firing shots once or twice. These careful tactics have significantly reduced gun crime."

That unrest was reflected online, with several tweeters responding furiously to the outcome of the inquest.

Labour MP Diane Abbott, whose constituency of Hackney North and Stoke Newington neighbours Tottenham, tweeted: If the #duggan jury believe that he did not have a gun in his hand when he was shot, how can they find it was a lawful killing? #baffled

David Lammy, MP for Tottenham, said on BBC News that there was a "contradiction" in the fact that the jury had concluded that Duggan had a gun, yet was also deemed to have been lawfully killed.

A strong police presence is expected in Tottenham tonight. Duggan's killing in August 2011 led to riots in the borough which then spread across London for several days.
