The local content policy of the federal government was designed to empower Nigerians in the management of their affairs in the absence of expatriates. This gave birth to training of Nigerian graduates and students in the use of sophisticated software like PDMS and HYSYS for engineering designs.
Aspen HYSYS is the most popular and industry driven software used for process design, especially designs related to the oil and gas industry. In fact process engineering equals HYSYS. While PDMS handles graphical and catalogue based plant design from conception to decommissioning.
HYSYS handles process modeling from the oil/gas well, to the NGL plant or to the refinery and distribution. Presently it is being used by SHELL, CHEVRON, NNPC, EXXON-MOBIL, ETC Here in Port Harcourt a training centre is now open to offer training in the use of these software to let interested individuals or group upgrade their information database and equip themselves for the oil and gas career. The instructors are experienced and technically based engineers. This training contains latest PTDF training format and materials.
Training is open to graduates and students of; chemical, mechanical, petroleum, civil, gas, materials and metallurgical, environmental engineering as well as geology industrial physics and chemistry and those interested in the oil and gas industry.

At the end of the training, a project on modeling of a process plant will be carried out by the trainee. The project will be discipline specific

PDMS-Plant Design Management System is a simulation database driven software used for all aspects of engineering design .equipment, pipe work, structural, ducts, electrical, cable and trays, pdms can be adjusted to fit any project requirement. This software owned by AVEVA USA is one of the leading software in use in process and power plant design worldwide. PDMS produces 3D designs and the accompanying plots both in isometric and drafted forms making it easier for the engineer to quickly get MTO material takeoff information for his project .Design in pdms makes use of standard component catalogue with control using engineering specification. This software is easier to use than most software because of the 3D graphical handles and standard templates.   An easy to use windows GUI, for instance the pipe work application enables you to create standard pipe sizes, valves, elbows, tees, gasket, flange e.t.c.it provides automatic pipe routing and Isodraft is used to produce isometric plots and MTO. PDMS is used together with AutoCAD in most of the ongoing offshore and onshore projects worldwide.

HYSYS is owned by ASPEN Canada .It is full scale process simulation software for oil and gas processes. It models steady-state and dynamic processes involving physical transformation of oil and gas such as, oil well simulation, hydrate formation conditions, dew and bubble point calculation, operating PVT data, for oil and gas processes. It handles separation processes, dehydration, absorbtion, and compression e.t.c
