With 2015 approaching, the brouhaha on the leader to take Nigeria to that promised land has begun. Naturally, politicians with their sugar coated tongues have started wooing Nigerians into voting them in, promising things they never plan to/or simply cannot deliver. It is an age long knowledge that good leaders do not come aplenty in Nigeria, but along our history, some leaders though short-lived (Muritala Mohammed and Mohammed Buhari/Idiagbon) have shown signs of being the real deal.

The leadership of the last 25 years have not only corrupted and polluted Nigeria mentally, but also ideologically. The average Nigerian sees nothing wrong with stealing, just steal a size-able amount, and you become a hero. This mentality has trickled into every facet of our lives and into almost every age grade. The Jonathan administration, came in with a lot of fanfare and expectations, but you and I can see that even though the president may have good intentions, he is clearly out of his depths. Reason? Nigeria is still being ruled by the military. They have just removed their Khakis and put on civilian clothes. Take for instance the General Obasanjo 18 page letter to the Presidency. That, on normal basis is a treasonable offense, rather than bring him in for questioning to verify his claims, the best the presidency could do was report General Obasanjo to the Human Rights Commission. Let's not even start on the Boko Haram issue and the questions it has raised on accountability/leadership. vis- a-vis quashing the insurgents.

The truth is, Nigeria needs mental cleansing before we can progress as a nation. The military puppet masters needs to be brought to book and made to atone for their sins on Nigerians. Hence the ideal leader Nigeria should have at this moment in time, is someone who has enough clout and courage, to bring these puppet masters to book. This singular act will cascade down to the general populace and send a strong message to all and sundry that you cannot get away with breaking the law (especially corruption).

Jerry Rawlings made this happen in Ghana, a similar revolution is taking place in Georgia (part of former USSR) and these countries are better off for it. The question is who amongst the potential presidential candidates can do a Jerry Rawlings and set things aright?
