Keshi Has Lost It - Victor Ikpeba by hayoakins(m): 12:17pm On Oct 03, 2014
The former African player of the year has criticized the Big Boss for his selection ahead of the crunch qualifiers against Sudan this month

Former Nigeria forward Victor Ikpeba has lashed out at coach Stephen Keshi over his decision to call up ‘rookies’ for the must-win pair of 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan this month.

The Super Eagles, reigning African champions, could miss out on defending their title in Morocco if they fail to win both matches after starting on a wrong footing last month.

Nigeria lost 3-2 to Congo in Calabar before pulling a listless goalless draw in Cape Town against South Africa and sit third on the table with a single point out of a possible six.

While the out-of-contract Keshi insists he is still building a good squad by handing fresh call ups to several new players, Ikpeba has raised the alarm over the possibility of the country missing out on qualifying due to the Big Boss’ self-serving posturing.

As part of his 24-man squad for the double-header against Sudan, Keshi called up Aaron Samuel of Guangzhou R&F in China, Emmanuel Sunday on SV ScholzGrodig, Austria, Anyora Ugonna of Haugesund FC, Norway and Hope Akpan of Reading FC, England. The 52-year-old has ignored more experienced campaigners Ikechukwu Uche of Villareal, Obafemi Martins of Seattle Sounders and new kid on the block Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City.

“For how long will Keshi build the Eagles,” Ikpeba who won the African Player of the Year award in 1997 asked in a Vanguard interview.

“He has been building this team since 2012 and still wants to continue building in 2014. No. What type of builder is he? His success in South Africa where he won the Nations Cup was a collective effort.

“He has placed us on the hard corner of qualification for the Nations Cup in Morocco. While Nigerians are gritting about their chances, he has invited rookies for the must win matches against Sudan. Keshi needs to ask himself questions. He should be a critic unto himself.

“He is either blaming the players or attacking even ex-internationals who criticize him.

"He has invited rookies to the national team. He is busy excluding the best players because of his personal interest. My brother, Keshi has lost it,” Ikpeba said.

The fate of the coach who led Nigeria to their third African title in 2013 will largely be determined by his side's performance over the two legs with Sudan as the new Nigeria Football Federation board takes charge.

Nigeria will travel to Khartoum to play the first leg on October 11 before returning to Abuja for their first match there since 2011 on October 15.

Congo will take on South Africa for an opportunity to cement their leadership of qualifying Group A during the same period.

A African proverb goes thus :as goat take stand, na so them go price am... An ugly truth is better than a beautiful lie.. As coach Stephen Keshi has decided to sacrifice national glory for personal glory, he will fail... NIGERIANS FORGET ABOUT MORROC 2015...you can quote me anytime, anyday and anywhere...

Let us cast our minds back, Keshi tends to start slowly. At the last AFCON he started with 2 draws and by the 3rd match, the Vultures were already circling him to tear him up, yet he won that cup.
At the last CHAN, he started with a defeat, and ended up with a Bronze medal.
At the World cup, we struggled against Iran and still ended up in the last 16 ahead of the likes of Ivory Coast, England and Spain.
Keshi has unearthed more new talents than any coach before him. We are singing the praises of Onazi, Musa, Omeruo, Babatunde, Oboabona and Oshaniwa today because Keshi preferred them to the known 'stars'
He will not only qualify us for AFCON, Keshi will defend the title. Let us not get carried away with the dooms day prophets like Ikpeba and their fifty-kobo journalists. It is sad that journalists continue to put their interview mics in front of loud-mouths like Ikpeba. He has personal issues with Keshi, so what do we expect him to say that is new. Both him and the Siasia they are clamouring for are dwarfs compared to Keshi and they know it.

And Ikpeba calls himself an ex-footballer? He should be ashamed of himself. Do you ever stop building a football team? Should Keshi just stick to the team that won Afcon in 2013 even if some players loose form or are no longer at their best? Has Barcelona or Bayern Munich stopped building their team simply because they've won their leagues and the Champions League? Why do they bring in new players every season?

How many years did it take Joachim Low to build the German team that won the World Cup? There were at least 10 new players in that squad from the one that played at South Africa 2010.

Ikpeba, are you sure you're qualified to analyses football with this kind of reasoning. A football team is always going through building. It never ends.

That statement by Ikpeba shows nothing more than bias and hatred. How can he call building a team in two years a long time. It took Clemens Westerhof Five years to win the Nations Cup. Yet he is criticising Coach Keshi for two years of work.

To be honest, if what Coach Keshi has done is just Two years work, he should be commended and not condemned.

Ikpeba said.
You guys are just not happy that Coach Keshi has change the order of things. No more regular names like before.

A Nwofor or Mba can rise in the team. A Michael Babatunde could go to the World Cup. An Oshaniwa can be a revelation.

You can campaign from today till tomorrow Mr Ikpeba. Before Coach Keshi's arrival, Nigerian football was decaying. Very few turned on their TV sets to watch Nigeria play. Where were people like you then? What did you guys do?

Now the Super Eagles have a face, you guys want the Coach sacked. Please.

Can you Mr Ikpeba go for months without Salary and pay your coaching staffs with your money to keep the Super Eagles going? Can you Coach the team, even after the NFF prepared a sack letter hoping Drogba, Yaya and co. beat us at the Nations Cup? Can you Coach the Super Eagles without a contract?

I think Keshi needs to alter his style a little. i mean you cannot do things the same way over and again and expect different results.

This case is totally different. We havent qualified for this competition yet so those your superstitions might be wrong. Yes we are singing the praises of new talents he harvested but my point here is that it's not a time to harvest talent when we have 2 must win games to qualify us for Nations Cup. He was supposed to call up our 'bestest' players for this match instead of going to bring boys from Pakistan League and the likes...like what the hell

Mata was the best player at Chelsea for two seasons. Mourinho let him go because Mata did not suit his pattern.

Experienced players you want for Keshi might not be suitable for the kind of team he is trying to build.

After being appointed Coach Of Barcelona, Guardiola offloaded Zambrotta, Giovani dos Santos, Edmílson, Deco, Ronaldinho, Lilian Thuram, Oleguer Presas, Santiago Ezquerro, Marc Crosas.

You must not keep experienced players to do well. Victor Ikpeba just want us to return to the NFF list where there would be no opportiunity for unknown players.
