There is every reason to believe that the government of Nigeria is putting sincere and proactive emphasis on our digital ecosystem, but too little has been done to awakening the youth to reality.

Campaign rallies held with large number of persons in attendance, especially our youth is a perfect reflection of the decay in the system. Engaged youth won’t be standing for hours under a temperature above 30 degrees centigrade, just to listen to the same old political philosophies of people who claim to be leaders.

However, there are still some positives to take out from our leaders, it is easy to condemn, but difficult to appreciate. Government at all levels are gradually seeing the need to embrace technology and push same for an effective economy.

Nigeria is nowhere near a tech hub; it lags behind in terms of instilling technology in everyday life. We examine some of the major areas where technology needs to show its effect.

4G

The Nigeria Communications Commission isn’t doing enough to raise the benchmark of the internet service. While other countries are in the preparatory stages of entry 5G network, we are still struggling to get it right with 3G.

On paper, most internet providers claim to be offering data speed of 3.6 MBps, but in reality, what’s available is only 512 KBps, which is not an accepted speed in the 21st century economy.

Nigeria is far behind in broadband speed, it makes a joke out of her internet infrastructure, when it is impossible to launch 4k streaming, or cloud gaming at the comfort of one’s couch.

A reliable, effective, affordable and fast internet will bring us closer to the world. It would improve our economy and above all, usher in a new way of interacting with downloadable contents.

E-voting

e voting

Election violence in Nigeria is primarily caused by party supporter’s rascality, multiple-thumb printing, ballot-box stuffing, ballot-box snatching as well as non-accreditation of eligible voters.

Each election has increased the “democracy-treat-level” of the nation, whose unity is hanging on a tiny thread. Mixed-reactions and feelings are always the outcome of elections at all levels of government. The result is scary, leading to several body-bags, emanating from clashes between supporters of different parties.

Technology has the answer to election violence in Nigeria, only if it’s transparent and done right. There were stakeholders pushing for e-voting and the body, empowered by law to conduct elections wanted to try an electronic voting in 2015, but was out-rightly rejected. This should be a priority issue for the government.

E-learning

The success of e-learning in Nigeria lies on the hands of a trustworthy internet infrastructure. You wouldn’t be writing an exam, only for the internet to disappear. That would be an absolutely screwball situation.

The conventional education system is decayed, student’s need to be exposed to e-learning infrastructure. E-tests, e-lectures and functional e-libraries could really improve the education system.

The university system is already corroded by fraud of multiple proportions; this has created a large number of “un-employable” graduates, not because of their class of degree but by their poor performance outside the walls of the university.

There was a story of a young Nigerian corp member who had a second class upper degree in Economics (university name withheld), she was posted to a school to teach Economics, where she should be a natural champion but her mediocrity was the order of day. She was asked to define Economics. She said, “Economics is LIKE buying and selling.”

Not to bore you with what happened next, but that’s the reality of most Nigerian graduates. They pay their way through the system, while the unfortunate ones end up with a third class or a pass. The enforcement of e-learning facilities as well as a central record result system, can checkmate lecturers who have earned a notorious reputation for collecting “blocking” money to influence grades of students.
