You can save a lot of money by purchasing a used computer rather than a new one. Depending on when it was built, a used computer may have many of the same features as a computer purchased off the shelf. However, there are many things you need to consider when getting your computer secondhand.

Function
A used computer may have a slower processor, less memory and a smaller hard drive than a new one. If the computer doesn't have all the features you want, see if it can be upgraded. Don't be put off by a few dings on the case. However, always check a computer to see that it's functioning properly before purchasing it. Also, see if you can find a refurbished computer from a professional seller.

Time Frame
If the computer is more than 4 years old, its processing power may be half or less that of a new computer. This is because newer computers often use dual or quad core processors, which is like getting two or four processors all in one. Also, older used computers may have obsolete operating systems, slower CD- and DVD-ROM drives and less-sophisticated graphics processors. Never purchase a computer that's 10 years old or older.

Benefits
Often it is less expensive to buy a used computer than to get a new one with the same features. Also, since computers are modular, you can buy two used computers in less-than-perfect condition and consolidate them to make one that works well. You can get a used computer from a secondhand shop very easily. A cheap, older secondhand computer is best for children, the elderly and others whose computing needs are light.

Considerations
Buying a used computer is not for the uninitiated. A certain amount of tech-savvy is required. You should have a basic understanding of the inner workings of the computer. There are many things that can go wrong with a secondhand computer. If you've never built or upgraded a computer before and the thought of opening the case frightens you, you might want to pass on the opportunity.

Potential
That used computer may not be all you want it to be right now. However, most computers upgrade well. The first two things to consider upgrading are the memory and the graphics card. These two improvements will make a significant difference in the performance of your computer. Replacing the hard drive or adding a second one also can boost a computer's performance. The best way to approach upgrades is to do a little at a time. Buy one upgrade and give yourself time to install it. This way, you'll save money and give yourself plenty of time to complete each task.
