Can You Leave Your Laptop On All The Time? by laptops4u(m): 5:40pm On Nov 18, 2008
Laptops are useful tools. You can take them with you almost anywhere you want to go. Using a laptop, you can connect to the Internet at a cafe, library or hotel. However, laptop computers are sensitive instruments. Just like desktop computers, they can malfunction if they're not treated with care.

Effects
If you're planning to leave your laptop on for more than an hour, you should have the power management set to place the computer in sleep mode after just a few minutes of idleness. You should also use a laptop cooler, which is a specially designed stand that contains a fan to dissipate heat as it's produced.

Features
A laptop computer contains all the same components as a desktop computer. These include a central processing unit (CPU), random access memory (RAM) and a hard drive. However, there's less air space inside the unit for cooling. Laptops usually contain fans and heat sinks to help keep the processor cool. Also, most laptops come with a battery and an adapter that can be used to run the laptop directly from an electrical outlet. The adapter can also be used to charge the battery.

Benefits
There are very few benefits to leaving your laptop on all the time. You may gain a little time because you don't have to boot the computer's operating system. Also, you may save some time by leaving programs loaded in memory. However, these savings, too, will be minimal. You will save more time by shutting the laptop off each time you're finished with it, since shutting down clears the computer's memory.

Considerations
While it's possible to leave a laptop on all the time, it isn't a good idea. Leaving the unit on for days at a time can also cause problems with memory. Some operating systems keep programs in memory even when they've been shut down. As you open and close programs, the computer's RAM becomes choked with data. The only way to purge the memory is to shut the computer off and leave it off for at least 30 seconds before turning it on again. In computer terminology, this is called a cold boot.

Warning
Laptops tend to run hot because the components are installed inside a very small case. Over time, the heat generated by the computer can cause irreparable damage to its circuits. Also, leaving the computer plugged in all the time puts it in danger of being subject to a power surge. This can not only damage the unit; it can also cause you to lose your data. To be on the safe side, use a surge protector with your laptop computer. Turn it off when you're done with it and disconnect it from the power supply.
