No President Resigns During War, Jonathan Tells APC by etunoman76(m): 5:57am On Nov 07, 2014
The Presidency has said there is no part of the world where the President resigns during an ongoing war.

It therefore challenged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress to tell Nigerians where such presidents had resigned during war time.

The Presidency was reacting to the demand by the leadership of the APC, including its National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, that President Goodluck Jonathan should resign because of the on-going war against the country by the members of the Boko Haram sect.

Reacting on behalf of the President, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, asked Nigerians to ignore such calls.

He said, “The suggestion by one of the leaders of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Bola Tinubu, that President Goodluck Jonathan should resign from office as a result of the activities of insurgents in the north-eastern part of the country, has once again shown beyond doubt that the former Lagos State governor and his colleagues in the opposition are a bunch of political anarchists and charlatans blinded by an unbridled appetite for power.

“The assertion by Tinubu at a political rally in Ilorin, Kwara State on Wednesday that in ‘civilised’ societies, the President should have resigned is unfounded and lacking in historical precedence.

“We challenge him to tell Nigerians which part of his ‘civilised’ world has there been a call on a President to resign during an on-going war.

“When terrorists attacked the United States of America in September 2001, the leaders of the Democratic Party did not demand a resignation of President George Bush but rather they rose in defence of the American nation to support the various measures taken by the President to defeat the al Qaeda terrorists.”

He said it was necessary to remind the APC leader that it was leading members of his party who vehemently opposed and openly criticised the proscription of the Boko Haram sect by the Federal Government in 2013 with some of them even going as far as describing it as a move against the North while others tried to incite the civil society to condemn this anti-terrorists’ action.

Okupe said that it was therefore unfortunate that the APC, in its desperation for power and eagerness to make selfish political gains from insecurity, had shown a total lack of the spirit of nationalism and statesmanship in its public comments on the challenges of insurgency in the North-East.

He added that it was particularly sad that the leaders of the APC would mount every available podium to pour invectives on the President and ridicule members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria who were in the battlefield against terror.

“Telling the President to resign because of an ongoing insurgency is the height of insensitive, indecorous and bad politics which ought to be roundly condemned by every patriotic Nigerian,” he added.

He said that by the provisions of the Nigerian constitution, the only recognised means of changing a government was through the electoral process.

Cheap defense from the confused and clueless administration.

Shameless regime that keeps on using senseless excuses to defend its lack of competence to fight and bring BOko Haram to their kneels.

If there is any government that needs to set the record for being the first to resign for inability to contain internal insurgency, that govt must be this one headed by GEJ.

Yeah Jonathan is truly right, he speaks like a true leader.... He surely needs to defeat boko haram and make the country good before any election...
Or can election occur in a country that there is war... The answer is NO..
So APC should stop making tom and jerry noise and allow jonathan to concentrate on his work...

GEJ till 2019

Upper cut. APC pull your ear again; No president resigns during war. That's the height of cowardice. It has never happened before and will never start from us.

Azikiwe nna, Pursue your re-election vigorously, then win the war permanently.

Continue to ginger their weeds.

No president does but I guess there are presidents that travel to other countries to pre-empt an impending war when their own country is at war.

Wow!! What a presidency.

Spot on. I would have loved the APC if they had an ideology and a meaningful plan for Nigeria. But unfortunately, they have none but their sole aim,is how to occupy Abuja in 2015. Looking at the category of people that even make up the APC,is enough to make me want to look elsewhere. I'm yet to see the APC say anything good about the FG or the armed forces for once, since this issue of insurgency came up.

this shows the extent of your knowledge, including Doyin Okupe that made the statement.

You and Doyin Okupe certainly haven't heard and read about Neville Chamberlain stepping down for Winston Churchill during the 2nd World War.

You see why you're called Janja.weed?
I choose my words carefully and I repeat 'NO PRESIDENT RESIGNS DURING WAR'!
You even went as century back as 1940 to refute our claim but could only come up with a feeble defence of a sick prime minister, Neville Chamberlain who died days after leaving active service.
Lets not even begin to argue the difference between a president and a prime minister.
GEJ till 2019.

Your teachers either failed very badly or you are just a first class dunce, ...going by what you wrote up there.

you see why you are called saTAN!

You very lack sense, Chamberlain still served in his successor's cabinet as the lord president of the council after his resignation in May and died in November. A sick president would be allowed into that post?

By mentioning President, who doesn't know Okupe was refering to the leader of any nation's affair, no matter the nomenclatural concept?

i dont understand how some Nigerians think, How can u expect Nigerian as africa biggest market and west Africa most powerfull country to not be alive to its responsibility, it in Nigerian best interest to see that the Military hnd over power to Civil government and that d west African Nation did not degenerate into war because it they do, Arms will follow from that Nation into Nigerian state and into hands of BH which will lead to d escalation of Violence and Bloodshed.

for those that are saying dat mr.President shldnt hv visited, what if their is war in that country and Mortar, missile and other grade A weapon fall into d hands of BH, they will immediately hold d whole north and Push south wich may fall within months, another question is how did Isis bcame so powerful? its because they infiltrate hotspot(war zone) and catcher away grade A weapon which we shld not allow BH to hv.

pls Nigerians b4 u call ur president Names pls think first and know that he took that action as a Good president that understand that economic prosperity grows in d same Environment where peace stays.

Well, Mr.President, the problem with this comparison is: NIGERIA IS NOT A CIVILIZED COUNTRY AND YOU DONT COME ACROSS AS A VERY CIVILIZED MAN.

Also, when the United States was attacked there wasn't a time when President Bush exonerated Al Qaeda after they took responsibility for their actions, nor did facts reveal that Bush and Obama were buddies. Osama didn't say Bush asked him to fly the Planes into the tower then accuse Democrats or a certain tribe/ethnicity/ or race, either.

Shame on you!!!

Nigeria's government's responsibility is principally to the Nigerian people and NO ONE ELSE!! The Constitution of the FRN says so!

Gosh, I hate it that I'm even dignifying this post with a response!
