Shouldn’t We Apologise To Dr Oyenusi? by Titilayodeji13(m): 5:58pm On Nov 09, 2014
ME: Heheeee! See me, see trouble.
Never believed this country would one
day go to the dogs. All virtues are
shredded, trashed...
Nigeria: What have we done again? I
know you complain a lot...Mr
Complainant; Mr Know-It- All. What is
it?
Me: Yes...should we really not
apologise to Dr. Ishola Oyenusi and all
his other friends for murdering them?
Nigeria: Murdering who? Who was Dr.
Ishola Oyenusi? Where was his
hospital?
Me: You don’t remember Oyenusi? I
know you are a very forgetful nation.
You can forget anything, including
even your wetin call with your
woman...
Nigeria: Abeg, stop that... just remind
me...who was Oyenusi?
Me: The pioneer robbery kingpin you
killed by firing squad in Lagos in
September 1971...
Nigeria: Oh! That one. He deserved to
die. The wages of sin is death. He got
what he deserved and Nigeria has no
apology to offer.
Me: I know you won’t agree with me
but considering what you do with VIP
criminals today, I wonder why you
would insist that he deserved to die.
Nigeria: Can you remember what he
did? Can you remember that the whole
world was shocked by what he did?
30,000 people watched his execution
live at the Bar Beach in Lagos.
Me: Go on...
Nigeria: He was an armed robber who
stole millions.
Me: Millions? No. He stole 10,000...
Nigeria: Ehn..Just 10,000... Are you
sure of that?
Me: I know you are so forgetful. He
stole 10,000 Nigerian pounds and he
was tied to the stake and shot. Today’s
Nigeria won’t remember all these. I
am sure you can’t even remember
what ‘firing squad’ means.
Nigeria: So, why should we apologise
to Oyenusi?
Me: Why shouldn’t we? Have we got
any iota of reason not to feel guilty for
killing over peanuts? What have we
been doing to his successors who steal
billions?
Nigeria: Ha haa, why would you talk
like that? Has any thief escaped the
wrath of the law since Oyenusi? How
many have been shot, hanged or
jailed? You know we have zero
tolerance for any form of malfeasance .
Me: What is the difference between
what Oyenusi did and what many do
today in the name of politics and
business? Oyenusi snatched his first
car on Herbert Macaulay Road in
Yaba, Lagos, to satisfy his girlfriend
who was broke! He snatched the first
car he saw on the road, killed the
owner and sold it for £200. The
girlfriend got the stuff, she was happy
and the romance continued. Many men
who misbehave today do their thing
either to satisfy the greed of their
voracious wives or to keep their
beautiful concubines. And they go on
with their evil ways, arrogant,
uncontrollable and beyond reproach.
Unlike Oyenusi who said at the point
of death that he was “dying for the
offence (he) committed,” the high and
the mighty today would smile,
pronounce their innocence and dare
the law to come for them.
Nigeria: You are so bitter. But have
you considered going to court to press
charges against these people if you
know them?
Me: Me? Press charges? The one the
government pressed against some
potentates, it either withdrew or
frustrated. Now, you are asking me, an
ordinary dispensable mortal to press
charges against men (and women) who
are used to raping the nation
untouched.
Nigeria: At least we are trying our
best. We have landmark cases to point
to.
Me: Like Abacha’s...?
Nigeria: Thank you. If we could deal
with a whole former Head of State,
who else can escape from our laws?
Me: Who else can escape? His son
nko?
Nigeria: Oh! Is it because of the N446
billion case you have been telling this
your Oyenusi apology tale? They are
not related and you know it. Will you
say the poor young man has not
suffered enough? Should he continue
to suffer all forms of indiginity simply
because he and his siblings were
unfortunate to have lost their father?
If the dark-goggled General were
alive, who among you, his traducers,
would have dared ask him a single
question on his reign? I don’t blame
you, death caused the whole
thing...The dead is always guilty.
Me: You meant to say the poor is
always guilty as charged?
Nigeria: The poor ke? Does the law
discriminate on the basis of whose
purse is fat and whose is not? Your
reasoning is dangerous and we won’t
let you poison the land with it. If you
say because you are poor you could
become Oyenusi, you should be ready
to face what the kingpin faced in
September 1971. You cannot
misbehave, rob, kill and later turn
round to blackmail the system with a
puerile claim that you are being
punished because you are poor...
Me: I’m surprised at your argument. It
is because of your double standard
that the nation is no longer safe.
Today, there is a rat race by everyone
to destroy everyone else. Bombs,
bullets everywhere! My friend, the
born again Christian, would swear the
biblical end time is here.
Nigeria: But insecurity is not just our
exclusive problem. There is madness
everywhere. In Iraq, in Syria, in Egypt,
in Libya, in South Sudan, in Mali.
Me: ...And in Nigeria, terrorists appear
firmly in control of the lever of fear.
Churches and mosques are freezing
our liberty to be our usual selves. We
can no longer drive into premises of
God with our women clutching their
handbags. Worship places are now
turning to fortresses equipped with
bomb detectors and guarded by
soldiers.
Nigeria: The world has simply gone
mad.
Me: Is that your response?
Nigeria: What else should I say? One
day, the problem will simply walk away
as casual as it strolled in. Let us
pray...
