Four airports yet to attract schedule flights 20 years after, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 00:00 DESPITE being commissioned over two decades ago, four of the 21 airports controlled by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, (FAAN) have not attracted scheduled flights. They are the Minna, Makurdi, Bauchi and Katsina airports. The airports, which, according to an industry publication, Business Travel Weekly "have runway length that can adequately take the jumbo jet Boeing 747 aircraft, the Airbus A340, the Boeing 737 and other Airbus series have continued to waste away. Katsina and Makurdi airports can take the Boeing B747 aircraft while Minna airport can take the DC 10 or A330." The airports are therefore losing revenue that would have been generated through landing and parking charges, and from concessionaires that would have been operating at the terminal buildings. Other allied services such as car hire, hotel and restaurants and even banks that would have createdjobs are losing from the dormant state of these airports. The publication says: ' Niger State government has already put machineries in place to ensure scheduled flights to Minna Airport by Capital Airlines, while Cross River State government had in the past worked with some airlines to ensure scheduled flights to the state airport." Further investigation by the Nigerian Compass revealed that Kwara State government last week signed an MOU with a Dubia-based technical partner, ACT, to establish a flying academy in Horin, while the state government is not relenting on its efforts at making the Ilorin airport a cargo airport. |

i think the country should have more than 2 international airports, if its truth that those airports mentioned above have enough space to land planes mentioned above, then I do not see any reason why they should operate international flights |

MP007: who and who are travelling to Katsina and Minna? Is the plane not expected to carry passengers? when was the last time you travelled to bauchi and Makurdi? To do what? Even the one in Kano is under utilized The only areas in Naija that need international airports due to traffic are Lagos, Abuja, PH and Enugu or Owerri or Aba. See how IBB wasted our money and built one in his hometown and for 20 years not a single international flight has landed there. Useless leaders |
